Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands. July 17th surf report ; The swell was looking bigger this morning. The winds were out of the southeast at about 10 mph or so. I took the dingy and had a quick look at Kandui’s to see what was going on. I wasn’t there long before I saw what probably was the set of the day. 3 grinding waves, well overhead and open from start to finish. I hurried back and a few of the boys grabbed their boards and took the dingy back to surf Kandui’s. The rest of us got a big boat and it wasn’t long before we were at Kandui’s ourselves. But the swell seemed to have turned a little more south already and sets were only a little over head now, so we pushed on to Hideaways. Waves there were only a couple of feet overhead, but conditions were good so we went out and got a few. There was a big cloud in the west and we knew it was only a matter of time before the winds would switch and blow west. When it did, we headed back to the resort and had lunch, waiting for Rifles to clean up a bit. About 2 o’clock or so we got out there and were stoked to see overhead waves spinning down the reef with offshore winds. The Billabong girls got some good ones and Rasta got some great tubes. Rebecca and Silvana surfed Rifles on the best day of the year last year, so they are veterans already and got some good waves. We surfed until dark. Looking for the swell to back off a bit tomorrow
