Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands September 19th surf report The anticipated swell was showing this morning, but not as macking as we had expected. We checked Kandui in the morning. It was glassy enough, but had a weird bump on it so we pushed on to Hideaways. The conditions were really good there with the south-southeast winds and it was a little bigger than yesterday. Thick too with the long period swell! Everybody got some sick ones before the tide got too low. We headed back to the resort to fuel up on some chicken sandwitchs, then went and surfed Beng Beng at low tide. One of our guests stayed behind and surfed overhead 4 Bobs by himself. He was stoked! We are hoping to see that swell increase more tomorrow.
Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands: September 18th surf report The surf out front was looking a little smaller this morning in the pre dawn light as I was walking to the restaurant for my cup of joe. We were hoping for calm winds this morning so we could surf Rifles again, but the wind was blowing pretty hard out of the southeast so that idea was out. We went to Hideaways instead, expecting smaller surf on the west facing reefs like Hideaways, but to our surprise it was bigger than yesterday. Sets were 3 or 4 feet overhead and there were a few bigger ones toward the end of our session. Maybe our new swell was coming in a bit early? Anyway, conditions were good and we surfed until the tide got a little low around midday. In the afternoon the winds backed off a lot. Most of the guests went back to Beng Beng where it was not quite as good as yesterday, but pretty fun with only a few guys out. The rest surfed 4 Bobs which was pretty clean by then and only a couple of other guys out. A big swell is on the horizon. It might be hitting tomorrow.
