(Sunday, July 7, 2008) Made “Garut” Widiarta (Kuta-Bali) has pulled out all the stops to defeat the hard-charging Wayan “Gobleg” Suyadnya (Uluwatu-Bali) to claim the richest-ever event on the Indonesian Surfing Championship (ISC) tour, the Quiksilver Open Lakeys, Presented by Coca Cola.
Goofy-foot Garut was in his element in the three-to-four foot (1-1.5 metre) glassy lefthand walls of Lakey Peak, winning Rp 20 Million (approx USD $2,000) and 3,500 ISC Championship points. Garut’s first win in two years also sees him jump to third place overall on the 2008 ISC Tour rankings.
“I’m so stoked to finally win a contest again,” said an exasperated Garut after the final. “I’ve been training a lot but seems like I haven’t done so well in comps lately. So I’m so happy to finally win!”
Garut was forced to play catch-up to his opponent after a less than an ideal start to the decider. After falling on his first wave, Garut lucked into a perfect inside lefthander as Gobleg waited patiently on the outside trying to better a 6.0 point ride. With nothing to lose, Garut let loose with a combination of deep bottom turns and huge off-the-tops to post a whopping 8.5 out of a possible 10 points.
His very next ride earned Garut a score of 6.83 and suddenly Gobleg was chasing a 9.34 point deficit. With 10 minutes to go, Gobleg found a 7.74, yet inevitably time got the better of him. On the final horn Garut raised both hands to the sky and the huge smile on his face said it all.
Gobleg was gracious in defeat. “This is the first time I’ve made it to the final in a big contest like this, so I’m still really happy with the result,” lamented Gobleg. “Congratulations to Garut, he surfed so good.”
Both goofy-foots accounted for some tough opposition enroute to the final.
Garut disposed of Devis Ratif in the semis and Made “Bol” Adi Putra in an exciting quarter-final encounter. While Goblet halted the 2007 ISC Champ Lee Wilson in the semis and Wayan “Betet” Merta had to settle for equal 5th place when he fell to the eventual finalist.
Also held on the final day were the Masters and Women’s Divisions, with the Masters comprising of two Balinese competitor, Ketut Menda (Kuta) and Wayan “Gachang” Wisma (Sanur) and two locals, Moh Ali and Jimmy Hamsah.
The Roxy Open Women’s Division saw six surfers from Bali make the trip to Sumbawa to compete. Full results below;
