****AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE****
Hi folks and thanks for waiting around for us to get back from our little surfing excursion up to Balian today.
The usual routine was followed for these trips, up at 4.30am, coffee and shower and then load the car up and hit the road. And for the first time of how many trips I’ve down up that highway the traffic was amazingly sedate (for Balinese roads anyway).
Pulling into the parking area we were pretty happy to see waves rolling through in the head to well over head high range and peeling off left and right. Light off-shore wind coming out of the North @ 1-3knot and only half a handful of other surfers already in the water. What more can I say…
Weather wise it was gloomy with cloud cover and intermitant rain through the morning before the sun busted out and started to suck the moisture back outta the ground for a very hot and humid afternoon.
Tidal info just for the record had a 1.0mtr Low @ 11.00am and then she’ll be running back up for a 2.0mtr High around 6.00pm.
Ok I’m pretty wasted right now and can still see that broken white line down the middle of the road. So enjoy the photos and Slim will be back with another round of Bali surf and weather info for ya’s again tomorrow.
Swell Forecast for the period 23rd Jan through till the 29th Jan isn’t looking real crash hot. Today Saturday is showing wave height to be still holding in the 2-3ft+ range on the more open swell locations. Sunday see’s wave height dropping off into the 1-3ft+ class before fading out to 1-2ft come Monday afternoon. Tuesday see’s a small bump in size putting us back into the 2-3ft range, that will hopefully hold through Wednesday. Thursday through to next Saturday and it’ll be back to 1-2ft+. NB: 2-3ft is equivilant to waist to head high surf. So nothing spectacular for Bali wave standards but still we should be able to find a wave or two if you know where and when to look. Plus who knows what may pop onto the radar between now and next week ?.

My last few trips to Serangan and at Keramas I’ve seen a lot of people get “sea urchin spines” in their feet. You don’t only find these nasty little creatures at these two locations but at just about any surfing location that has rock and reef. It’s pretty futile to try and cut them out or even pull them out with tweezers as they are very brittle and only break apart. The last time I was unlucky enough to get some stuck in between my toes… was up at Medewi. Being in a very awkward spot I went to a doctor to see if they could be removed. He told me it was just best to leave them in and within a week to ten days they should disolve. So just a heads up if your walking out for a wave over a rocky bottom, try and walk on the high spots and watch where you are putting your feet if possible.
a tip from sumatra on urchin spines throw a lime into the hot coals of a fire and when the skin is slightly charcoaled pull it out of the fire, cut it in half and vigorously rub the cut lime into the area where the spines are. They disapear in minutes. (Bruce from Sumatra)
Best Regards from Bali
