14 June 2011, Cimaja-West Java: Solid 3-5 foot glassy waves greeted the Round 2 Open Division contestants arriving at Cimaja Point this morning on Day Two of the Best West Java Surfing Competition presented by Quiksilver. The cobblestone point of Cimaja was on show, providing the perfect forum for high performance surfing by Asia’s best surfing professionals vying for the prestige, prize money and points on offer in this dual sanctioned Coca-Cola Indonesian Championship and Asian Surfing Championship tour event.
There were 32 surfers competing today for the 16 open spots in Round 3, so in each of the eight heats in Round 2 only two surfers would advance into Round 3, coming from those with the two highest combined waves scores. This pressure provided the spectators on the beach, all with front row seats; the best surfing entertainment even money couldn’t buy.
The first highlight of the day came in Heat 2 with Bali’s Made “Bol” Adi Putra wowing the crowd with an impressive display of backside surfing, posting the morning’s highest waves score of 7.0 out of 10 with a series of huge hacks, adding to his 6.0 wave already in the bank to also end the heat with the highest combined waves score of the day, 13 points out of a possible 20.
Heat 3 saw Bali’s Ketut “Kunyit” Suartha jump into the lead, which he never relinquished, but the real battle was between Bali’s Randy Dinar and local 15-year-old grom Dennis Nasution for second spot. Both goofyfooters traded positions multiple times during the 20 minute heat, and with just seconds to go Dinar jumped onto a medium sized wave that looked like it had the potential to get him back into second place. The judges conferred for several minutes after the buzzer, and in the end had to do a countback as the final scores of the two best waves were exactly the same for both surfers, a total of 6.15. But Dennis’s third best score was a 2.7 as opposed to Randy’s 2.5, so young Dennis advances to Round 3, a major milestone for the local lad.
In Heat 5, 2010 Quiksilver King of the Groms champion and Cimaja local Andre Julian one-upped veteran pro and Coca-Cola ISC CEO Tipi Jabrik to take the heat win, smashing out an under the lip backside blast to post six points and ensure his third round berth.
The surprise of the day came in Heat 6 with local’s Dede Suryana and Asep Pahruroji going head to head for the top spot, with Asep coming out on top with a impressive 6.25 score for an amazing late drop into one of the only real barrel rides of the morning.
Currently three surfers are in contention for the Power Balance Power move with Dede Suryana doing a massive turn that defied body and board positioning to muscle his board through the turn, Luke Landrigan from the Philippines absolutely destroying the lip with a front side re entry that made it rain in the Christmas Islands, and Bol’s roof top floater that saw him travel across the whole bowl section at Cimaja that also put him in line for the Rp 5 million cash prize.
In addition to the completion of Round 2 today, four heats of the Master’s Division (35 and older) were also in the near perfect wave conditions. Standouts were last years Master’s winner Ketut Wirtawan, Made Lapur, and last year’s Coca-Cola ISC Masters Champion Ketut “Kombong” Juliarta.
Tomorrow swell forecast predicts much the same conditions as today, so with Indonesia and Asia’s top ranked pro surfers hitting the waves in search of ranking points and prize money, it will be another action packed day so be sure to come to Cimaja to check out the Best West Java Surfing Competition presented by Quiksilver in person, or you can also follow the on-line and view heat draws, heat and waves scores, video’s and photos and more at www.isctour.com/events/cimaja11 and on Facebook look up Indonesian Surfing Championship, Quiksilver Indonesia, and Roxy Indonesia.
