The Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai Islands
Aug 8th surf report
We had a bombing swell move through but, unfortunately, we had some unexpected weather move through as well and that messed up what would have been an all time day at Bankvaults. As it was, we still had some exciting moments out there dodging big sets and negotiating lumpy faces. No one would disagree that there were not some 10 foot (Hawaiian) waves out there. Or, as our running joke goes, “it was a solid 6 foot”! It was just about impossible to get the big sets and it was just our crew out there most the morning so we towed into some. That worked out well for everyone that wanted a turn, but especially for our surf guide, Guto, who got whipped onto a bomb that hit the reef just right and he pulled in deep into probably the biggest barrel I have ever seen anyone get out there! Big statement, but I’m standing by that one. Unfortunately, the wave before it blocked our cameraman and the only shots we have are a hysterical Guto falling off on the shoulder in a post adrenaline dream. Big time barrel! We did get a clean afternoon session out there today, but it was less than half the size as a couple of days ago. Where were those light winds when we needed them! Looking for another good swell to arrive in a couple of days, and with better winds, so stay tuned.
