24 September, Siargao Island – Philippines: Colorful dancers, music groups, government dignitaries, event organizers, tourists, locals and of course surfers all came out today to participate in the official opening of the 20th annual Siargao International Surfing Cup, which will run from today until the 28th at the Philippines most famous surfing wave of Cloud 9.
It was indeed a historic day as it is the first time in the event’s long history that is an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying event, marking a big step forward for the event and Philippine surfing. It is also co-sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Championships, who have been working with the ASP and the event organizers and supporters during the last two years towards getting it on the ASP schedule.
Dancing and music started off the proceedings at 9 pm, followed by introductions, thank you’s, speeches by Governor Matugas, Congressman Matugas, and Mayor Rusillon, known as the Godfather of Philippine Surfing for his tireless efforts in support of the event, and then heaps of food for all.
Today the waves were too small to be contestable, but there is a swell on the way and the competitors were told be stand by at 6 am tomorrow morning when a call will be made according to the existing conditions. It is expected that there will be a Friday start to the event, which the 48 surfers from such countries as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, France, Israel, are frothing for, anxious to get out and tackle the perfect barreling waves of Cloud 9.
The 2014 Siargao International Surfing Cup is a co-sanctioned 1-star ASP Men’s World Qualifying event and a ASC Grade 4 event that will run from 24 – 28 September 2014 and boasts US$15,000 Prize Money. See more info ASPWorldTour.com and at www.asiansurfingtour.com
The 20th Siargao International Surfing Cup is presented by the MVP Group of Companies and Manila Mining Corporation, with event organizers the Municipality of General Luna and Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte) and support by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), the Philippine Department of Tourism, Cloud 9 Boardriders Club and Fluid Surf.
The event is sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals and the Asian Surfing Championships with the assistance of the Philippine Surfing Federation.
