BALI
6th November 2014
Hi surfers and welcome back to your baliwaves (the one and only baliwaves since 1999) for the latest news and best views on surfing and weather conditions from here on any sane surfers first choice tropical surfing holiday destination, Bali.
This mornings 6.30AM surf check here on the Outer Reefs of Tuban was showing a small increase in wave height. The tide was still running in at the time and showing 2-3ft waves breaking between Kuta reef and Airport Left. Surfing conditions were clean and glassy with hardly a breath of wind at the time.
But we thought we’d head down to the Southern end of the island and maybe sneak in a couple of un crowded waves at Balangan. Arriving just after 7.00AM to find wave height also in that 3ft or head high range and surfing conditions relatively clean and tidy. The wind had now started to dedicate to the S-SW but still only light. The problem was that there was already at least 60 learner surfers in the water. The first set wave that came through I counted 7 *surfers take off in sequence on top of each other.
So as it shows in today’s photo gallery we kept going South down to Uluwatu where we hoped to see a bit more size and etiquette in the line up. Uluwatu was delivering waves in the chest to well over head class, breaking on Temple’s and the Main Peak while the tide was just hitting the top. Crowd wise here it was also a bit out of control and some blatant dropping in going down. Lucky there were a couple of local boys in the line up to help regulate control and send in back to shore the worst offenders.
So remember if your coming over to Bali to surf don’t think you can just drop in or take any wave you want, you’ll be lucky to pull it off and more than likely be sent back to shore. Smile, try showing a bit of respect and restraint, don’t be a zombie.
Weather wise this morning it was kinda 50/50 blue sky and sunshine that eventually turned out to be just another hot and sunny day by midday. Right now at 5.30PM the wind is coming out of the SW at 4-8knot.

so good , I copied and pasted this because it was worth mentioning twice ,
well said Slim …., “Lucky there were a couple of local boys in the line up to help regulate control and send in back to shore the worst offenders.
So remember if your coming over to Bali to surf don’t think you can just drop in or take any wave you want, you’ll be lucky to pull it off and more than likely be sent back to shore. Smile, try showing a bit of respect and restraint, don’t be a zombie.”
Ps I must add to this by saying – The Indonesian Surfers must be some of the coolest, happiest ,friendliest, fun loving bunch of surfers on the planet …., and what makes them even more than cool is they maintain this attitude amidst the increasing amount of rude, bad mannered, disrespectful, snaking, dropping in, stinky eyed tourist who try to avoid eye contact with others in the surf (or Zombies as Slim calls them) …,
Who think they can come to Bali and basically sh#t on them, and “their” surfbreaks …, and everyone else.
Food for thought …, know your place, and take a good look at how friendly most locals act towards visitors and each other,
….., this is also how locals expect you to behave in return – you (as a visiter) should be learning from that – never ever be any less friendly (or respectful) than that either, both in and out of the surf….., it will make you a better person, and bring you good karma to go with it.
