Pumping Mentawai barrels July 2016 by Andy Potts
JUNE / JULY Mentawai Standout Sessions.
Words, clip and photos by Andy Potts.
I have just returned from numerous TPW charters in The Mentawai.
Here are some highlights from two of the best sessions. There’s still 2 to 3 months of the season to go, come up and score the session of your life – http://specials.theperfectwave.com.au/indonesia-1/
Date: Macaronis June 28, 2016.
Swell: S/SW, 6-8ft at 15 seconds
Wind: The wind was light and variable with minimal local weather from the North.
General Desciption: It only took 30 minutes from the break of day for the swell to fully arrive and begin to hit the reef from just above the take off spot.
Local weather throughout the season pushed a lot of water over the reef and into the lagoon behind what was the beach.
It somehow made the wave feel very raw with so much water now pushing through.
There were only two boats on the moorings and a very chilled vibe from the resort guests.
Everyone was able to score some epic Maccas barrels all day until dark at 7pm.
Date: July 17th Lances Right.
Swell: SW 10ft at 17 seconds.
Wind: light and variable, local rain systems seemed to squall every half hour throughout the morning.
General Desciption: A much anticipated swell with all the ingredients to deliver something a little over the top.
It did!
A solid group of chargers lined the reef from top to bottom as shallow, powerful dark tubes unloaded endlessly.
It felt like any break between sets didn’t allow enough time to get your head around where the right place to sit was.
There was plenty of carnage for some crew who were straight to the first aid kit on the boat to lick their wounds, while others scored the best waves of their lives.
Adam Instone from California was pumped to score the wave in its prime, putting in a solid 10 hour day of epic barrels and one super heavy beat down.
