BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
16th 17th May 2021
Hello Bali people and thanks for stopping by the baliwaves (the original Bali surf report website since 1999, for surfers by surfers)
I don’t know if most of you are still aware that Bali is really still hurting, most of Bali anyway. I guess you could say there are a couple of area’s around Canggu and down on the bukit that are cashing in from the European explosion. My family and I have a small guest house that mostly serves to Aussies and there hasn’t been any real Aussie visitors here on holiday since last Jan 2020. We are not alone of course, especially if any of you have watched the last video clip I posted with footage from Kuta and Legian.
If you know people here in Bali please drop them a line and check to see if they are ok. There are a lot of desperation and depression happening around the island. Likewise if any of our friends can spare a dollar or two to help my Family it would be greatly appreciated, thanks (please hit this link to help out). Most of Bali is hanging out for our Australian brothers and sisters to return and Make Bali Great Again.
Well the waves are still hanging around since arriving on the 15th. Uluwatu is still delivering the best options with non stop waves through all tide phases. Ractrack on the low end Temples and Main Peak through the top end. Yesterday our friends at Swell Bali Hotel Bingin sent us through some more photos and a quick summary of Balangan, Bingin and Impossibles. According to our friends the number of surfers through these current “on” days had definitly increased with a hungry crew of local and International surfers all over it on the perfect barrel ridden low tide.
Over on the long sectiony “Impossibles” reef the numbers have been in excess of 40 surfers, not too bad spread over the 300 – 400mtr area. But with the strong off shore wind surfing conditions have been pretty tricky. Bingin is more tucked away under a dominating cliff line and a lot more protected from the strong ESE wind. While just around the Dreamland headland to the North of Bingin Balangan has been pretty mellow and still plenty of waves on offer. But similar to Impossibles it’s a fast “run you down” reef break most of the time.
Today the 17th and our morning surf check on the Outer reefs here in South Kuta was showing some waves in the 2-4ft class breaking between Kuta reef and Airport Left. The tide was still pretty low at the time so only Middle Reef was an option. But now as the tide is filling in Airport left should have a few waves. Kuta Reef tends to get hit by the strong off shore wind a little more so.
This ESE Trade wind has been blowing relentlessly the last week only leaving a few options for getting some clean waves in. Just about everywhere on the East coast you can forget except Keramas when there is enough water over the reef early mornings. Even here along the West Coast this wind hits everywhere north of Kuta beach (cross shore at Legian) blowing hard onshore. So you can count out Canggu and everywhere in between Medewi as being blown out.
Weather wise today it’s been a mostly hot and sunny day so far in the Kuta area. Temperature wise the mercury is on 29 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 84%. The wind is already strong out of the East at 15knot.
The next tide in Bali today will be a 2.2mtr High at 12.24pm
Currently we are in the middle of the moon phase with the Full moon rising on the 26th.
Tomorrows Surf Forecast for Bali is saying that we will still see similar sized waves again as today, and you guessed it. More fresh to strong E-ESE wind to go with it.
Bali Corona Virus situation in Bali is showing a big drop in new cases but is a bit of a mystery at the moment. After just coming off an extended long weekend and the end of the National holiday (almost at an end) there have been (against the decree of the President) a lot of naughty / self caring people traveling all over Indonesia, so things may change. Hopefully not but we will soon see over the next couple off weeks as the data collectors etc resume reporting.
After watching the ABC International news broadcasts its really no wonder why so many Aussies are terrified of the Virus. The Government also seems to be praying off the PC and media influenced. Along with a very drawn out and delayed vaccination program to keep the Australian citizens locked down in country. It only seems like yesterday that the Aussie Liberal government was bragging at having secured over 100 million (maybe more) doses of the vaccine. This all works out pretty good for the “local tourism” market in country as Aussies do love to travel. But I’m sure the tourism sector that markets to international visitors are hard hit.
Not all Australians love to travel, don’t get me wrong. There are plenty that will never travel over seas, let alone too far from their local pub or club. Then there are the Aussies that do trek all over the globe to see “their World” and the cultures and customs of other nationalities. And of course with Australia being such a culturally diverse nation these days there must be 100’s of thousands of people that still have families and relatives abroad that they would dearly love to visit and visa versa. So I really don’t think all Aussies agree to the strict “no international travel” laws in place. Especially with no plan in place to reopen at the moment. Once we are all vaccinated (or as many as possible) What else can we do except carry on with life. Just like the Flu Covid-19 is now going to be part of our lives. NB. I am an Aussie who would dearly love to return to Australia for a family visit, only one of the many expats globally who can not afford the price of the current International airfares or the quarantine costs in Australia. The old saying is; “you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy”. It has been a long 17 months so far without any income, except the support from dear friends.
Singapore is another example also implementing strict lockdowns that is affecting many travelers and so many ex pats working there now unable to travel anywhere except internally. There are other countries as well that come to mind keeping their borders locked tight. On the other hand many other countries are desperately pushing ahead their national vaccination programs in order to open up to likewise vaccinated travelers. Bali is certainly in this category and desperately needs you and your friends back here ASAP

Happy to spare what I can. Hope they add the US to the travel portal, will be back as soon as they let me. I work at the Denver Airport, we’re back to 60k outbound passengers a day, will be 90k+ for upcoming Holiday weekend. Americans will be back to inject plenty of capital.
Yes I have to agree with you Slim the latest Polls have the Liberal Party at only 49% approval with the ALP at 51%, I’ll be back to Bali with all my mates as soon as they let us out of this cage.
