Kandui Surf Resort in the Mentawai island chain; June 21st surf report . It was nice and glassy this morning and the skies were clear. The swell had gotten a bit bigger overnight and was coming a little more out of the south that yesterday. The winds were blowing ever so lightly out of the southeast and so we decided to make Hideaways our first stop. The swell was a little too south to get in there really good, but there was some shoulder high sets and the conditions were perfect so we paddled out. There were 3 guys already on it, but Karina and Erica were with us and in their bikinis they make us welcome anywhere we go! We all got a few waves but it was a little boring, so we took a look at Bankvaults. It was showing a lot more swell, but the winds strengthened and turned more east making the barrel shut down, so we pushed on to Beng Beng. The waves there were a little overhead with very good conditions. There were a few people on it, but they were cool and we all had a good time. Our second boat went to Nipusi were it was catching all of the size, but had less than perfect winds with those side shore east’s blowing. The waves were several feet overhead and the crowd was light so our crew had a good time. Another boat went back to Beng Beng in the afternoon and got some more fun waves. Conditions were still very good with the light east winds and the tide was lower, which is a good thing over there. The rest of us stayed around and surfed 4 Bobs. It was only shoulder high or so, but fun. Hoping the current swell will hang in there for tomorrow.
Kandui Surf Resort in the Mentawai island chain; June 20th surf report. Winds were blowing pretty strong out of the north this morning. The swell was looking pretty small out front so we decided to take a look at Pistols, which is a swell magnet and takes a north wind. It was ok up there with head high plus sets rolling through and no one out, but we rolled the dice and moved on. Nipusi looked alright, but there were a few guys on it. It was still a little small for Bankvaults. The wind felt like it was backing down a bit so we figured Burgerworld might be worth a look. The winds were still less than perfect there and there were two boats and a few guys on it, but we went out anyway hoping for some good luck. And good luck we got! Within a half an hour everybody had gotten out of the water except for us (they had probably been out since dawn) and then the wind started backing down and the sun even came out. The swell was also on the increase and we were getting some fun, overhead waves to ourselves. After a few hours we were getting pretty tired and the swell was really getting too big for that spot and the wind started picking up again from the northeast, so we headed back. But with the northeast wind and increasing swell we figured Beng Beng was worth a look on the way. There was one boat on it when we got there and 3 guys out. The conditions were really good and head high plus sets were coming in. We couldn’t pass that up so we went for another surf. Minutes later the other guys packed up, the boat left (they had already been there awhile), and we were surfing by ourselves again! After a couple of hours of surfing, we had to go. We had no other excuse to leave except that we couldn’t paddle anymore. It almost felt like a sin to leave a spot overhead and building with offshore winds and nobody out, but we were toast. Didn’t get back until late afternoon. Looking for our swell to get a little bigger for tomorrow.
Kandui Surf Resort in the Mentawai island chain; June 19th surf report. Winds were out of the north this morning, but not as strong as the last couple of days. The swell was looking pretty small so our guys choose to avoid the possible crowd at Nupusi and went up to Last Resorts. Good call! Conditions were good and there were some good shaped waves and no one was out. They surfed till about lunchtime. We had some new guests arrive this afternoon and a couple of them had to get wet so they surfed 4 Bobs and actually got a couple of waves in the 15 minute time window they had given themselves! Karina Petroni also arrived this afternoon with some other Vans team riders and photographers. We are hoping to get some good waves this week for their upcoming ads. Looking for a little something to fill in tomorrow
