There was no denying it, “The General” had a drinking problem. To be honest we all had a drinking problem back then in the early eighties, and you could probably say we also showed all the traits of long term substance abuse and too many years living in the tropics. When it came to drinking though, “The General” made the rest of us look like “teetotallers”.
I remember one particular night, we were coming back from Sanur after meeting some girls at the Loco bar. We were all wired as we had been on the island (Lembongan) for three weeks, and we were letting our hair down and hoping to get some “Brown Skinned” action. We arrived at Kuta full of spirits. The girls were keen and impressed with our large Bungalow complex, complete with pool and tropical garden. Shortly afterwards “The General” arrived on his clapped out Vespa. One problem……there was no girl with him. “Where’s Yuli?”, we asked. “I don’t know, she was on the back when we left Sanur, It must have been that big pot hole I hit a few kms back”. “Oh well , any Bintangs left”, replied “The General”. We never saw, or heard from the poor girl again.
