(Tuesday 27 March 2007) – Local boy Rudy ‘Bom Bom’ Hartono defends his title two years in a row to take out the 2007 ‘King of the Groms’ Cimaja, West Java on Sunday 25th March 2007.
The “King of the Groms’, a series of core junior surfing events held by Quiksilver, the core boarding and lifestyle company, shook the sleepy town of Pelabuhan Ratu over the weekend as nearly 100 under 16 year old competitors scrambled for waves in aim of the prestigious junior surfing crown.
“Surfing has really taken off here and we are amazed by the huge number of junior surfers competing here today. It is an amazing turnout not just from the junior surfers but from the non competitors who are getting involved here today.” States contest director Hamish Wyllie.
Located only a few hours drive from Indonesia’s capital city Jakarta, Cimaja, Pelabuhan Ratu is a haven for many city dweller surfers as it provides high performance waves that caters for both experts and beginners.
Initially planned to be held at the boulder rock point of Cimaja itself, officials decided on relocating the event to the sandy beach break of Sunset Beach as it provided competitors with better conditions throughout the day.
A riveting final which included local hotshot and defending champion Rudy Hartono who cleaned up the final with snappy re-entry maneuvers while Dadi Anwar trailed throughout the heat to come second. Ryan Hidayat surprised the locals with his new found confidence to bring a third place to his CV and micro grom Arifin flowed with smooth style to come forth.
Winner Rudy Hartono and chaperone will be invited by Quiksilver on an all expenses paid trip to Bali to compete in the South East Asian final which will be held at Canggu Beach on the 10th of June 2007. Here he will meet fellow regional champions from such places as the Philippines, Tawain and Sumatra. This will be his second time competing in the South East Asian finale running for the overall champion position which could enable him to go to Capbreton, France to compete in the world ‘King of the Groms’ later this year.
Next week the Quiksilver team will be in Sumatra to hold the ‘King of the Groms’ in Padang April 1st 2007. The Quiksilver ‘King of the Groms’, a series of core junior surfing events brought to you by a core boarding company.
