**** MORNING SURF UP-DATE **** Good morning surfers and thanks for dropping by the baliwaves 7/7 daily Bali surf and weather report. Well there’s not much to add on from yesterdays report crew with wave height still only just showing in the 1 foot range in between Kuta Reef and Airport Left . That was at 7.00am when I went down for my first look at the ocean. The tide was getting up around the middle of the run in, and as it hits the top I’d imagine there’ll be bugger all breaking on the Outer Reefs . There’d still more han likely be the odd shoulder to shoulder high plus wave breaking down on the sourthern end of the island at locations like Uluwatu on the West coast and Nusa Dua over on the East coast. Wind direction was coming outta the NNW @ 3-5knot and surfing conditions were still nice and clean. Weather wise in Tuban this morning it’s shaping up for another top day down at the beach. Plenty of blue sky for starters and right now at 9.00am the mercury has already reached 26 degree’s Celcius and heading for the low 30’s. We’ve also got the Full Moon rising tonight, but no swell, so there ya go. But what it does mean is that we’ll be seeing some big difference’s in the actual tidal range over the next 3-4 days. Changing dollars to Rupiah on the streets of Kuta you’ll find that 1 Aussie dollar gets you around 7,250. Rupiah and 1 American dollar will get ya 9,090 Rupiah (1 small beer will cost ya 8,000 Rupiah). Seeing as the surfs pretty small at the moment I’ll try and get out and about with the little 6meg “diga-matic” and give ya’s a look at what’s happening out on the streets. Over to lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa and Made says; Wave height is still down in the 1-2ft range over there this morning but clean and glassy. There were no surfers in the water on lakey Peak or on Lakey Pipe at 7.00am when Made sms’d through to me and still 45 visiting “starting to get bored” surfers staying in the area. Ray from the Kandui Surf Resort in the Mentawai island chain of Sumatra has been busy but has sent through a bunch of reports to bring us all up to date, so read on and I’ll be back with more local Bali surf and weather info for ya’s before ya know it.
Kandui, 1st April ’07 – Our recent straight south swell was winding down this morning. Didn’t see too many ridable waves at 4 Bobs while I was making coffee. Winds were out of the east at about 5mph. Nobody was in a hurry to go anywhere with the east wind blowing offshore only at the spots that the straight south swell has trouble reaching, Everyone took their time sipping coffee and eating omelets, but eventually the surfboards started coming out and the boys took off to Burgerworld while I stayed behind to help Hui one more day. I didn’t give them much hope as they motored off because the east winds started to blow harder but, as luck would have it, the winds died just after they got there and they had glassy conditions for most of their session. Waves were a little overhead on the sets and there was only one boat around. (A bunch of young, female surfers that rip, I was told. A sort of ‘Young Guns’, girl style.) Anyway, the boys had a good time and only one had the energy to get back on the boat to Burgerworld in the afternoon. He scored though with only a couple people out from that boat and our boat driver. Expecting the surf to stay about the same height tomorrow, but hoping it will be more west in direction by the afternoon.
31st March ’07 – Every group is different, and this group is not into getting up too early. But this morning a couple of the guys were ready to surf before 7 so I took them out to 4 Bobs for a solo session. The winds were very light and variable and there was still the head high set coming through. They had it to themselves for an hour or so before the winds came up out of the north at about 10 mph or so. The rest of the guys were just ready by then so they all jumped in the boat and took off to Nipusi . The waves there were still overhead. Everyone had fun. The afternoon session was a repeat of the morning. Fun Nipusi . Expecting a little smaller surf tomorrow. Hui and me have about a half a day of work to go so maybe I can get in the water then!
30th March ’07 – The surf was looking a little bigger this morning and the winds were light and variable. We had a look at Last Resorts , but it was getting a little big for that spot and there was a boat on it, which is something you don’t see too often. (Damn, maybe the word is getting out on our little secret spot!) We were heading for Nipusi, but the swell seemed to be increasing before our eyes so about half the crew decided to jump out at 4 Bobs where we were seeing overhead sets. The rest went to Nipusi where the sets were pushing double-overhead. The winds came up slightly out of the south, but not bad, so conditions at both spots were ok. The swell looked like it peaked in the early afternoon and a few guests went out to Rifles which was getting just big enough to connect, even with the steep south angle of the swell. The waves were overhead on the good sets and there were reports of some good barrels. The rest of the crew were satisfied to surf 4 Bobs again this afternoon. I sacrificed the day to help our computer guy, Hui, to finish up installing the phones and hooking up surge protectors to help protect your computer and stuff when you come down and stay with us. This place is just getting better and better! Expecting smaller surf tomorrow. You can contact Ray at [email protected]
