(Monday 2nd April 2007, Medan, Sumatra) – Under dog Donny Saputra, surprises a roaring crowd as he takes out the Quiksilver ‘King of the Groms’ held last Sunday 1st April, 2007 at Air Manis Beach, Padang.
Quiksilver, a leading brand in boarding and outdoors lifestyle held the fourth leg of the ‘King of the Groms’ junior series events at Air Manis Beach, Padang. Air manis, located just over mountains of west Sumatra favors visitors with its serene views of scattered islands and lush untouched forests.
Held in 1 foot waves the one day competition turned into a frenzy as onlookers and supporters took to the beach to cheer on their favorite junior surfers. Surfing being a relatively new sport to this town, it was a real positive step towards the growth and recognition of the sport in the region.
“We are very thankful Quiksilver came again to Padang to hold another junior surfing event. The kids are all very happy and it’s a great chance for people to come and see what surfing competitions are all about.” Says local surfshop owner Harry.
Saputra’s fan club increased throughout the day pushing his confidence and earning him first place position over defending finalist, goofy foot speed demon, Charlie Adrian. Third place was given to Danny Ismaidi who scraped past last years runner up champ, Deri Palar.
Donny Saputra’s victory has earned him a place in the Quiksilver ‘King of the Groms’ South East Asia final held in Bali on the 10th of June. The winner from this South East Asian final will go to Capbreton, France to compete against the worlds best in the world ‘King of the Groms’ final – a real stepping stone for the aspiring professional junior surfer.
