Bali Tuesday 13 April – Quiksilver’s own Gazali Hamzah crowned King of the Groms for the second consecutive year after demolishing the grade 1 ISC junior event in 4 foot dredging Lakey Pipe, Sumbawa.
Quiksilver, the world’s leading boarding lifestyle company is proud to announce a successful day of competition at the first King of the Groms Junior series for 2007 taking place in Dompu, Sumbawa last Sunday, 11th March.
Initially planned to be held at the world renowned Lakey Peak, contest directors made the call to hold the under 16 event at Lakey Pipe, which supplied competitors with a reef point and a small beach break option.
“Conditions just turned too dangerous for the majority of the junior competitors here (Lakey Peak) today so we’ve moved the contest down to Pipe where competitors and especially parents were happy with the decision.” Explained contest director, Hamish Wyllie.
The first heats kicked off with competitors from Lombok engaging in battle against the local knowledge boys of Sumbawa. The beach was drenched with onlookers and supporters of their favorite competitors which created an exciting vibe for the event throughout the day.
“It’s a really positive turnout from the local people. Everyone is getting involved and are extremely excited to watch the kids surfing their heats.” Says ISC head judge, Brad Little.
Gazali easily dominated the final with huge backhand gouges followed by floater combo’s to confirm his crowning with younger brother, One who fell short taking out second place. Baharudin (Lombok) made a name for himself as he found 3rd position and local charger Muhlis made the final again this year and was placed 4th.
“There are so many good little surfers here its crazy,” explains Quiksilver rider Wayan ‘Betet’ Merta “they charge so hard and really push each other. There will definitely be future champions coming out of this place in the next few years.”
Gazali won himself a ticket to Bali and has placed himself in the South East Asia Final that will be held at Canggu beach, on the 10th of June later this year. The winner of this final will compete in the world King of the Groms event at Capbreton, France in the first week of August where King of the Groms worldwide will meet and battle it out for the prestigious crown.
Quiksilver would like to again thank the local people of Sumbawa for being positively involved and extremely supportive of the KOG event throughout the weekend.
