MORNING SURF UP-DATE **** Hi folks and welcome back to the baliwaves.com daily surf and weather run down for Bali today. I made it down for the 7.00am surf check of the Outer Reefs of Tuban to find wave height has geared back into the 1-2ft+ range between Kuta Reef and Airport left. The tide was just about on the bottom of 1.0mtr Low set for 8.00am and then running up for a 2.0mtr High through mid afternoon, same deal as yesterday. Kuta Reef was too small but breaking perfectly in the knee to waist high class, and a touch too shallow. Middle Reef had all the size, breaking in the waist to shoulder high range on the freak sets. There were also around 15 surfers in the line-up competing for every wave that came through. Airport left was similar in size to Middle Reef and will improve around mid tide. The wind was already fresh off-shore outta the ESE @ 4-8knot and will probably get upto full Tradewind strength by mid afternoon. Uluwatu would be the place to find the best waves today in the 2-4ft range (shoulder to head high plus). You’d also find plenty of beach breaks to choose from up along the Kuta / Legian strip of sand. Weather wise the rain that we copped the last couple of mornings has gone and we’re left with plenty of blue sky and sweet sunshine today. Heading for a maximum temperature of around 33 degree’s Celsius and the water temp is perfect for a surf or swim at 24 degree’s Celsius . Ok so there’s still a few waves to be had around Bali today and not a bad looking day shaping up for the lucky buggers here on holidays. So you know where to come to if your local is letting ya down, here to Bali ! I’ll get back to ya’s later this afternoon with the full wrap on what’s gone down today and let ya’s know if there’s any change in wave size. Have a good one and I’ll catch ya later.
Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa ; Made sent through is sms surf report from lakey’s and says that wave height is still showing at 2-4ft out on Lakey Peak this morning. Surfing conditions were clean and glassy for the 25 surfers picking off the perfect left and right handers on offer. Across the channel on Lakey Pipe there were another 4 surfers having some fun. There were a few “checkouts” yesterday bringing the total number of visiting surfers in the area to 70.
Kandui Surf Resort / Mentawai islands 8th May ’07 ; Overall, waves were smaller today. That was a little disappointing looking at the forecasts lately. It was sounding like today was going to be the day. We were getting pumped up when we saw that 4 Bobs was bigger, but when we did the surf check at Kandui’s with the dingy it was obvious that the swell was on the decline. The direction had gotten more southerly overnight and that’s why it was showing more in front or our place. Conditions were good though with southeast winds blowing, a little hard for a while, but then backing down mid morning leaving conditions nice. Our first boat went to Hideaways. There were some overhead sets and conditions were very good and no one was out. Sounded like a good session. When the tide got lower, they pulled anchor and took a look at Bankvaults. Conditions there were pretty good so they paddled out and got a couple of well overhead waves, but the wind started to pick up again so they headed back for lunch. The second boat went to Beng Beng. Waves there were fun also and clean, and sets were going overhead there as well. Only a couple of guys out and they didn’t stay out long. We had one guest go out at Kandui’s while I watched from the dingy. (Still nursing that staff, at least that’s my excuse!) The bigger ones out there, which were going 2 or 3 feet overhead, were few and far between. But when they came, there were some downright spectacular waves. The guys that were lucky enough to get them were getting the sickest, longest, dry barrels. I tell you, it would be hard to beat tubes like that anywhere in the world. And, of coarse, I heard someone say, “I got the tube of my life!”, which I always do after people surf that place. Not hard to believe when you are watching them. In the afternoon, one of our boats went to Bankvaults, but it was a little funky. A little west wind was blowing. They went out at Nipusi instead, but reviews did not sound that great. The rest of us stayed and surfed 4 Bobs. The light west winds left the conditions there perfect and heat high sets were coming through pretty regularly. There was only one other guy out besides us, and we all ended up having a really good session. Nice to be only thinking about how much fun it was after all the stress that goes into surfing places like Kandui’s. So cool to think how you can get the barrel of your life in the morning and just smack the lip all afternoon! This is a special place. Looking for smaller surf tomorrow. Long range is looking good.
