Super Bank / Australia 12th July 07
Hi to all Baliwaves patriots.
First of all I must apologise for the grainy shots today as I was shooting in low light last night and forgot to change the ISO rating back today….DOH!!
Anyway you can see the quality of the waves on offer.
THE SUPER BANK IS PUMPING!!!
The crowd is out of control again …but its no wonder. Because there are superb waves breaking for 500-800 metres or more…
At 9am there were at least 50 guys hassling for position around and behind the rock at Snapper…that’s in an area of 50 metres!!…With at least 200 more spread out down towards Kirra and another 100 getting ready to hit it or walking up the beach!!! Doesn’t anyone have a job around here??
I was shooting from on top of the hill at Snapper and master surfboard shaper Darren Handley of DHD and BASE surfboards came walking past after a surf and told me.
“Man its sooo good out there!”
When I asked what about the crowd?? He seemed to think it wasn’t a problem.
“The take offs are so heavy on most of them a lot of the guys are pulling back.. There’s only half a dozen guys getting the good ones”
I could see what he was saying was right as I watched another guy go over the falls and land on what looked like dry sand.
It’s a wonder there’s not more spinal injuries out here.
As well as being one of the worlds best shapers Darren is an excellent surfer who grew up surfing these waves and I have no doubt he got more than his share of barrels this morning..
So if you’re heading out to the super bank and your not feeling confident or you’re a novice go further down the point, near Greenmount or even Coolangatta beach where the waves are still world class but a little more forgiving…
Anyway crew, the tides going low around lunchtime so its gonna get even more shallow and dangerous.
If the wind stays offshore or stays light it should be cooking later this arvo on the mid tide…
The thing with the Super bank is ….. Its so long that there will always be somewhere along the break that is ok no matter what tide it is…
Also there’s a lot of surf rage getting around out here these days so if you cant handle the crowds or you’re not prepared to let the locals get their share …stay at home or take your anger to one of the beach breaks nearby that are all pumping and surf on your own. Its all about RESPECT
See Ya… I’m going surfing
Stay tuned to Baliwaves
Dan
