31 August, Taliwang-West Sumbawa: Mustofa Jeksen double-barreled his way into his fourth round heat win with an impressive display of tube riding on arguably the biggest and meanest wave of the day in the final hour of action at the Rip Curl Scar Reef Pro today, chalking up a perfect 10 point ride, the second of the competition thus far.
The first 10 point wave went to Dede Suryana earlier in the day for his triple barrel, which was quite a feat in the tricky conditions present at Scar Reef today, requiring him to backdoor the last two of his trips through the green room
The expected swell was a bit late in arriving, so the action in the water didn’t get started until noon with Round 3 in 3-4 foot surf. The swell built throughout the afternoon, and with the exception of a couple of heats presented the competitors with some of the best barrel opportunities of the event thus far reaching the 8 foot mark at the its peak.
In the Waterworld like set up of what the locals call Jelenga Beach and surfers the world over call Scar Reef, the judges viewed the action from one pontoon and the surfers paddled out from another, as the reef is situated about half a kilometer offshore.
The tide was going out and the arrival of the bigger sets had everybody watching with anticipation each time a surfer took off to see what would happen next, and when the big waves rolled in, shouts and cheers could be heard all the way to the beach.
By the time the sun was going the action had to be called off for the day with Round 4 halfway completed, and with the expectation that peak of the swell will hit tomorrow, the competitors will be dreaming tonight of their own 10 point barrels as the rest of the contest at this epic lefthand reefbreak will be completed tomorrow.
The Scar Reef Pro at West Sumbawa is a 6 star prime Coca Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship event with a huge purse of 60 million Rupiah (over $6,500 USD) in total prize money and 3,500 ISC championship points going to the winner. The race is very tight for the top spot in the championship, so with less than 100 points separating the top two seeds, this contest is crucially important.
The Scar Reef Pro at West Sumbawa is sponsored by Rip Curl Indonesia, the Tourism Department of West Sumbawa, the West Sumbawa Tourism Forum, the Coca-Cola ISC Tour, Surf Time Magazine, Newmont Nusa Tenggara, and Magic Wave.
