21 September, Siargao-Phillipines: Howling offshore winds all night and most of the day put the first round of the Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational on hold for the day.
Periodic standby calls were made throughout the day in hopes that the winds would die and allow the swell to rise, but when the wind finally did dissipate just before sundown it did allow some well-shaped waves to make an appearance, but only 1-2 foot with no time to take advantage of it to run any heats.
Never-the-less, the boys did paddle out periodically to try to get a couple, including Raditya Rondi and Jason Shibata, performing for the camera.
Wayan “Kopling” Wirtama and Billabong’s Peter Thew participated in an impromptu game of Australian “footy” in the front yard of the Sagana Resort, while others played ping-pong, surfed the internet checking the swell forecast or checked email, or rode around on motorbikes checking out the area.
Everyone is hopeful and ready for tomorrows 6:00 am standby call, waiting for some of those classic Cloud 9 barrels that are no doubt on the way, just taking their own sweet time in arriving.
There is a fiesta in the nearby town of General Luna tonite, and rumor has it there will be a beauty pageant later, so no doubt the crew will be rocking up there to check out the action tonite.
Should be fun…☺!!!!!!
