2 May 2009, Sanur-Bali: Rounds 1 and 2 of the Rusty Rumble in Da Jungle 6-Star Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour event were completed today at Bangsal Beach in Sanur, as the expected south swell delivered 3-5 foot waves to the notoriously razor-sharp reef throughout the morning and into the mid afternoon, providing solid conditions for the early round contestants.
The action kicked of at 8:00 am with the first of the trial heats, as there were several open spots in the first round to fill. The morning held several surprises, including a couple of rain showers, wind switching back and forth randomly, and then a change to glassy and sunny conditions until just on 2 pm when a strengthening south wind had Rusty’s GM and Contest Director Kane Faint call a halt to the action after the last heat of Round Two.
“We had a great session this morning, and seeing that there is another swell forecasted for this coming Wednesday, lets call it a day and then give the boys some great waves to surf in for Round 3” he announced over the loudspeaker after the horn blew. “Last years Rumble in Da Jungle took four days to complete, and as today was only the 6th day of the 21 day waiting period, there is plenty of time left so we can afford to be patient” he added.
The swell was expected to be a bit larger and stronger, but through the morning each heat seemed to regularly include at least one and sometimes two 4-5 foot, 4-6 wave sets, so all the competitors had a good chance to pick off some of the bigger waves and rack up enough points to advance. A good day at the beach by anyone’s standards.
Advancing from the trial heats and making it all the way into Round 3 were Soma Warsoma from Legian and Jake “the Snake” Paterson. They will be heading into a hotbed of smoking competition with the ISC’s Top 16, including 2008 ISC Champion Dede Suryana, last year’s Rumble in Da Jungle winner Made Awan, 2007 ISC Champion Lee Wilson, 2004 ISC Champion Pepen Hendrik, Made “Bol” Adi Putra, and of course Wayan “Betet” Mertha to name a few.
But don’t count out the local Sanur boys either, with Ketut “Kombong” Juliarta, Agus Purnawan, and Nyoman “Ompong” Sukasta not wanting to get shown up on their home turf, so expect them to be pulling out all the stops in Round 3!
Round 3 is scheduled to run on Wednesday the 6th of May. All competitors and crew have been told to stand by at Bangsal Beach at 6:30 am.
The waiting period for the Rusty Rumble in Da Jungle event started on the 26th of April and will continue until the 16th of May. Keep track of this and all Coca-Cola ISC Tour events by checking www.isctour.com for reports and photos from each day’s action.
