24 October 2009, Kuta-Bali: A full day of surfing action on Kuta Beach at the Rip Curl Surf And Music Festival today saw the GromSearch finalists and Women’s Division finalists decided as well as two rounds of the Men’s Open Division completed before the sun went down on Bali’s most popular beach.
The morning’s competition began at 7:30 am in glassy 2-3 foot waves with the 12 best groms in Indonesia battling it for the coveted “Ticket to Australia” in the GromSearch Final.
The standout performance of the morning belonged to wildcard-holder Putu Anggara from Nusa Lembongan, who posted the first big score of the day in his first round heat with a 6.0. Then in his quarter final heat he upped the ante with a 6.5 and then a 6.3 for a highest heat total of the GromSearch.
After an incredible morning’s surfing from some of the best young surfing talent from Indonesia, it was Nusa Lembongan surfers and Rip Curl Team mates Putu Anggara and Putra Hermawan who will be matched up tomorrow in the grand final to decide who will win the coveted ticket to the World GromSearch Finals held during the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, Australia in 2010.
Next up was Indonesia’s best up-and-coming surfing talent in the Men’s Open Division battling through the first two rounds in the fight to see who would take on the top ranked ISC surfers tomorrow in Round 3. The fat prize purse and ISC Championship points are their motivation, and they are pulling out all the stops along the way.
Komang Sujaya sent a loud and clear message that he wants that top podium spot, putting together the highest combined heat score of the day, first ripping a beautiful lefthander apart for an 8.5, then pulling off a big air next for a 9.25!
Another standout was 2005 ISC Champion Made “Bol” Adi Putra, who had put up 5 waves scores in the first 5 minutes of his Round 1 heat before any of the other surfers had even caught a wave. He also breezed easily through his second round heat as well.
With Round 2 of the Men’s Open Division completed, it was the women’s turn to see who would be meeting up in their final on Sunday. As the sun played peek-a-boo with the clouds in the waning afternoon light, the 10 women from Indonesia and Japan took to the water and make the best of the low tide and slightly bumpy conditions. Though choice waves were scarce during some of the heats, the women put on a great performance with last year’s ISC Women’s Champion Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea the standout. At the final horn, it ends up that three Indonesian and one Japanese will be meeting in tomorrow’s final.
The Rip Curl Surf and Music Festival will continue at Kuta Beach tomorrow morning, with Round 3 of the Open division at approximately 7:00 am. The finalists in all divisions will receive prize money, trophies, goodies and valuable ISC Championship points.
Live bands including The S.I.G.I.T, Scared of Bums, Psycho Fun, Painful by Kisses, and Gecko will produce a raging party to finish things off on Sunday night, so don’t miss it!
The Rip Curl Surf and Music Festival is sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship tour, and sponsored/supported by Maxim, TRAX, Rolling Stone, and SurfTime.
