****AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE****
Hello to all you surfers tuning into the baliwaves.com for our Sunday Session on todays surfing and weather conditions here on the wave riddled tropical holiday island of Bali.
Yesterday afternoon we took a drive over to Padang Galak, otherwise know as “Secrets” on Bali’s East Coast just to see if there was anything happening there. We arrived to find some nice little peaks coming through in the 2-3ft range and only 4 other surfers in the water. You can check out some photos from Secrets at the end of todays photos of Serangan.
This morning we got off a little later than planned arriving at Serangan around 8.00am. The wind at the time was blowing clean off-shore coming straight out of the West @ 3-5knot. There were already 30 surfers in the line-up with wave height still holding in the chest to over head class. Surfing conditions remained clean and tidy through till 10.00am when the wind started to shift more to the SW putting a little bit of chop on the face. But there were still plenty of waves for the now 60+ surfers spread over the two main sections.
Tidal info for today had us down for a 0.7mtr Low @ 9.30am and then filling back in this afternoon with a 2.1mtr High @ 4.00pm
Weather wise here in Bali today it’s been another hot and humid day with just the odd patch of cloud drifting by from time to time. Temperature wise it would have easily passed 30 degree’s Celsius by midday.
Swell Forecast for the period 23rd Jan through till the 29th Jan isn’t looking real crash hot. Today Saturday is showing wave height to be still holding in the 2-3ft+ range on the more open swell locations. Sunday see’s wave height dropping off into the 1-3ft+ class before fading out to 1-2ft come Monday afternoon. Tuesday see’s a small bump in size putting us back into the 2-3ft range, that will hopefully hold through Wednesday. Thursday through to next Saturday and it’ll be back to 1-2ft+. NB: 2-3ft is equivilant to waist to head high surf. So nothing spectacular for Bali wave standards but still we should be able to find a wave or two if you know where and when to look. Plus who knows what may pop onto the radar between now and next week ?.

My last few trips to Serangan and at Keramas I’ve seen a lot of people get “sea urchin spines” in their feet. You don’t only find these nasty little creatures at these two locations but at just about any surfing location that has rock and reef. It’s pretty futile to try and cut them out or even pull them out with tweezers as they are very brittle and only break apart. The last time I was unlucky enough to get some stuck in between my toes… was up at Medewi. Being in a very awkward spot I went to a doctor to see if they could be removed. He told me it was just best to leave them in and within a week to ten days they should disolve. So just a heads up if your walking out for a wave over a rocky bottom, try and walk on the high spots and watch where you are putting your feet if possible.
Re – Sea Urchins. A tip from sumatra on urchin spines- throw a lime into the hot coals of a fire and when the skin is slightly charcoaled pull it out of the fire, cut it in half and vigorously rub the cut lime into the area where the spines are. They disapear in minutes. (Bruce from Sumatra)
Best Regards from Bali
