On the opening day of the Billabong Pro Junior Asia Grade 5 ASP contest today at Keramas Beach in Gianyar, Balinese surfers Ida Bagus Simarai and Kadek Juliarta both won their heats and will advance to compete again in tomorrow’s Round of 96.
Of the 16 Indonesia surfers entered into the international pro junior competition that is being held from the 21st to the 28th of July at Keramas Beach in Gianyar, 12 of them surfed in Round 1 today. Of those 12, 5 advanced and 7 did not. One surfer, Kadek Mardiana, was a no-show.
Tomorrow will see Kadek Julyarta, Ida Bagus Semarai, Sandi Slamet, Gazeli Hamzah, and Putu Anggara, joining Darmaputra Tonjo in Round 2. Putra Hermawan and Agus Primanto are seeded into Round 3.
Conditions at Keramas today varied from windy and 2-3 foot at the 7 am start to 3-4 foot glassy faces midway during the morning’s competition. At just before 11 pm and the start of the last heat of Round 1, the wind began to blow strongly offshore and so organizers decided one round of surfing was enough for the day.
The competition will resume tomorrow at 7 am with Round 2.
The Billabong Pro Junior Asia has the top pro juniors from Australia, Japan, Brazil, Philippines, South Africa, New Zealand, and Hawaii in Bali to compete for their share of the USD 25,000 in prize money as well as well as ASP Pro Junior Championship points.
The Indonesian surfers will also receive points towards their rankings in the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Pro Junior Division.
