15 September 2010, Rote Island – East Indonesia: A mixed field of international surfers from Australia, America, and Italy were joined by the top surfers from Indonesia today in the Rote Open 2010 presented by Billabong at Boa Beach on the island of Rote to battle it out in the first round of the International Open division.
At stake is just over $10,000 in prize money with $3,000 going to the first place winner.
Indonesian surfers had the majority of the heat wins in Round 1, with 2009 Coca-Cola ISC Champion Lee Wilson a clear standout, taking to the air and posting some of the highest scores of the afternoon. Wilson is of mixed parentage, his father Australian and his mother Indonesian.
Made Awan from Bali won his heat to advance to Round 2, as did Mustofa Jeksen, Dedi Santoso, Komang Sujaya, and current Coca-Cola ISC rankings leader Pepen Hendrik.
Three Australians, Tai Graham, Adam Bennetts and his brother Chris Bennetts will join the lone Italian Mattia Morri to battle the Indonesia contingent in the quarterfinals that may take place tomorrow, depending upon wave conditions.
Earlier in the day, Rounds 1 and 2 of the Coca-Cola ISC Tour Open Division were completed before moving into the first Round of the International Open Division.
A mixed field of local Rote surfers and the visiting ISC Open surfers took to the water at just before noon as the tide begin to push and pump the waves up to a high performance 2-3 feet. Wave selection was the key, and with the right choice the competitors could exercise a mixed bag of aerials, floaters, hacks, and off the top maneuvers,
Round 3 is scheduled for tomorrow, where the advancing surfers from Round 2 will compete against the top ranked ISC Open surfers for a Round 4 berth and to keep their dreams of that $2,750 first place prize purse and 3,500 ISC Championship points alive.
