****AFTERNOON SURF UP DATE****
Howdy folks and thanks for dropping into the baliwaves.com (’99) for today’s 1 click run down on surfing and weather conditions from here on the always “in season” surfing holiday destination of Bali.
First up I suppose I’ll fill you in on why my main reports come through in the afternoon. To start the day off old Slim has to get up at the crack of dawn and suss out what the day is bringing on weather & wind wise, in able to make the location call. Next get my guests up and fed and their boards and gear loaded up. Then drive for 30 mins to 2.5 hours in possibly any direction (except due West). Hang around and make sure I get the best possible photos of the best possible surfers, 2 – 4 hours. Then get everyone back home safely. That’s when the hard work begins with the photo transfer, selection & editing. Typing up the report is a breeze, getting a decent internet connection is what really hurtski’s.
This morning I was down for the morning (6.00am) swell and wind check here on the Outer Reefs of Tuban. The wind was already up out of the NNW @ 5-9knot and the tide almost on the bottom of the Low. So that ruled out my first hoped for choice of sneaking down to the bukit. As you’ve already seen in today’s 54 strong photo gallery Canggu was our plan B. Arriving at 8.00AM after negotiating us through some of the knarliest traffic to find wave height in the 2-4ft+ range and a clean off-shore wind out of the NNW.
The left hand reef break out the front of the warungs was churning out some long and deep barrels for the locals who know that reef with their eye’s shut. The sand bar was improving with every new set wave, but not as good as the right hander in front of the river mouth. Yes indeed there were some nice waves refracting into Canggu this morning before the wind started to turn more to the West around 10.30AM.
Nice waves, but the niceness was removed after hearing of more thieves and theft activity in the car park in front of the sand bar. This has been going down for a long time in that area, and it’s not from the locals at Canggu. That I’m positive ! So next time you park in that area make sure you have no valuable’s in sight (in the car). Make sure the doors are locked (but there has been smash and grabs as well) Or better still have a driver or a local to watch your car / bike.
Weather wise the day dawned with a clear blue sky, but as the morning progressed there was a slow and steady build up of light cloud cover and it’s still overcast now at 4.30PM.
Ok friends I’ve had another big one and want to have a bit of a break (lie down on those cool floor tiles for an hour in front of the TV) before I take the family out for dinner. But tune in again tomorrow if you want the latest news with what’s happening here in Bali.
Baliwaves.com (Slim) took another surfboard up to Keramas last visit to give to a lucky grommet. So far in the last 16 or so years I think my personal and with the help of our supporters give away surfboard tally is around 70. So if you’ve got an old 5’8″ or anything up to 6’4″ bring it over for a deserving Balinese kid.
Changing dollars to Rupiah on the streets of Kuta (Bemo Corner) — 1AU$=Rp8,720 — 1US$=Rp8,620 — (or there abouts)

Night club danger; New’s came through to me of an Australian having the shit kicked out of him by no less than 6 security staff in a Kuta night club. Aparantly the English owners of the bar gave the order to the security staff…. Caruso’s, Cruso’s, (some name like that anyway) Bar in Kuta.
Best Regards in Surfing
