Kandui Surf Resort Mentawai Islands
Surf Report 19th April 2011
Being a surf guide at Kandui is not all it’s cracked up to be. The guest is number
one here. You would think that would be a no brainer, but you’ld be surprised how
many people are dissatisfied with other resorts around the world because of the
treatment they got from the guides there. Anyway, because we try to put the needs
of the guest first, that means we often are not getting many waves or we are surfing
a spot when we would rather be somewhere else, etc. But occasionally circumstances
all come together and the surf guides score. We call it “Payday”. Yesterday was
Payday!
After about an hour of trying to convince our guests to go to Bankvaults in the
afternoon, only one, Chad, finally decided to go. Everyone was surfed out and 4
Bobs was perfect with only our guys on it so it was hard for anyone get motivated to
leave. So it was only Chad, Drew, Justice, Solga the bartender, and me in the
boat. When we arrived at Bankvaults, we couldn’t believe our eyes. Perfect
conditions, double overhead waves pumping through, and only three other guys out who
were undergunned and told us to go on any wave we wanted. Score!!! As Drew put it,
it was “buttery perfection”, and we had it pretty much all to ourselves. There were
more waves than people to ride them and we were pinching ourselves to make sure it
was really. The sunset was beautiful, we had cold Bintangs in the boat, it was
Payday!
