7 April 2011, Canggu-Bali: In between torrential downpours, the weather continuing to be a challenge to deal with, Round 2 of the Open Division and two heats of the Masters Division were completed today at the Oakley Pro 2011.
The contestants and crew arrived at the beach starting at 7:30 am with rain pouring down, and it didn’t begin to slow until around 9 am, but it was evident that the wave and wind conditions were much more favorable today than yesterday. There were 2-3 foot glassy faces coming in with some degree of consistency, so after a brief consultation between the surfers representatives, the event organizers, and the head judge the green light was given for 25 minute heats and Round 2 was on.
First up was veteran Made “Bol” Adi Putra winning his heat, being chased by a charging Gazali Hamzah.
Several no shows in Round 2 gave a few of the contestants easy entry into Round 3. Noticeably absent were Rizal Tanjung, Rahtu Suargita, Wayan Wirtama and Mohammad Yunus, as well as Wayan “Gobleg” Suyadnya who had Rip Curl obligations so was enroute to Lakey Peak for the upcoming GromSearch.
The day’s standout surfer was goofy-footer Garut Widiarta, who had the day’s highest single wave score of 6.00 (out of a possible 10) as well as the highest heat score of 11.00 (out of a possible 20).
In the final heat of Round 2 where conditions were becoming more challenging with onshore winds and fewer lined up waves, CC-ISC CEO Tipi Jabrik posted a 4.00 score early and then added a 3.35 to win his heat with a total score of 7.35. Yudi Andika also advances with his second place finish and total score of 6.95.
After a 20-minute recess, the decision was made not to start Round 3 but instead to let the Master’s Division have a turn and see what kind of a performance they could produce. The wily veterans were impressive for the most part, managing to ferret out the better waves and making the most of them. Made Artha and Wayan Budayasa advanced over 2010 Masters Champion Ketut “Kombong” Juliarta in the first semifinal, and Ketut “Tawan” Wirtawan and Ketut Menda will face Artha and Budyasa in the final as Made Lapur failed to make it through.
Cross your fingers folks, as tomorrow should have less wind, though the rain and swell prediction remain the “X” factor. The organizers have called for a 7:30 am standby for Round 3, with the expectation that Round 3 can be completed as well as possibly getting into Round 4.
