Kandui Surf Resort Mentawai Islands
June 22nd Surf Report
The forecasts were calling for southeast winds and we all went to bed dreaming of perfect Kandui’s for the morning. But there might be only one wave more fickle than Rifles, and that is Kandui’s! It wouldn’t cooperate for us two days in a row. The winds in the morning were west and Kandui’s was looking like it was hungover from all the good times yesterday. But, no worries, Rifles takes a west wind and we were on it at first light. The swell wasn’t getting in there full blast with all the west in it, but it was plenty fun with waves going a few feet overhead on the sets. We got the best of it before the boats started rolling in. The wind was blowing everything out except our area and there was a local contest on Sipora, so that was funneling every boat within 50 miles right into our zone! As it turned out, the winds clocked around and started messing up waves here as well! With eight boats in front of the resort and funky winds, what to do?
PART ll
With 8 charter boats and other resort boats surfing the waves in our zone, in funky conditions even, we were on the fence. Start drinking heavily or take a boat ride and see if the wind had clocked around enough to clean up Bankvaults. Luckily, we choose the later. The waves were not as big as we expected at Bankvaults and it was inconsistent, but it beat the hell out of what the herd was surfing! Two other guys eventually paddled out to join us, but other than that we had the place to ourselves. Hopefully, we can pull a rabbit out of our hat tomorrow and avoid the boats again.
