****AFTERNOON SURF UP DATE****
Hi folks and thanks for dropping into the baliwaves (’99) for the latest and greatest news on surfing and weather conditions from here on the island of non stop waves, Bali.
We were up pretty early this morning and our first heads up on surfing conditions on the Outer Reefs here in Tuban was showing a bit of a bump in size, and the promise of more to come. Wrapping onto Kuta Reef in the waist to head high plus range. Middle’s also had some slight bigger ones but with the tide running in was running out of time. Airport Left was also showing some promise with waist to head high waves. Surfing conditions at the time were close to perfect with the wind coming lightly out of the East @ 3-7knot.
But, as it shows in today’s 68 strong photo gallery we decided that if it was going to be big and solid we had better mosey on down to Uluwatu for the best of it. Our first glimpse of Ulu was showing wave height a very consistent 3-5ft or head to double head high on the Main Peak and Temple sections. Crowd wise there was a healthy 45+ riders spread from the Main Peak down to the top of the Racetrack. By 9.30AM wave height had jumped another notch getting into the tripple head high class on the bigger sets. Now this had an instant effect on the surfers still out there, the ones out of their leauge that is. Within the hour the numbers were down to 20.
With today’s bigger swell and moderate high tide a lot of unaware surfers fell trap to the cave entrance, when they were trying to get back to shore. On such swells and tidal ranges there is a lot of water rolling right to the cliff front that line’s Uluwatu. All that water has got to run back out to sea, so it takes the path right past the cave entrance to do so. So ANYONE that doesn’t allow for the current only ends up paddling backwards. The only way out is to quickly make the decision to turn around, paddle back out and try again. Pretty rare you get caught out twice, right ? Well there was a lot of surfers that made the mistake once today. But, there was one young lady surfer that tried and failed twice. Now, usually, the first time around your pretty surfed out and want a break and not real happy with not lining it up. So imagine having to do it twice and your a young girl. The last sight I had of her was duck diving and being pummeled too way down past the end of the Racetrack. Hopefully she made it in down at Padang Padang. I got caught once around 16yrs ago.
Just thought I’d mention “The Cave”, really for the surfers that were up to it today there were some intense tube rides cleanly ridden. And there was also a lot of near misses. My points went to local Water Man Ketut Pitur, he paddled out on his lunch break and caught 3 set waves for 3 sick barrels. I caught 2 of them in today’s gallery.
Tidal info for today had us down for a 2.5mtr High @ 10.00AM and then draining back out for a 0.1mtr Low around the 5.00PM mark.
Weather wise there was a bit of early cloud fluffing about but as the Tradewind started cranking it up it was pretty much just another hot and sunny day. Currently right now at 4.30PM the outside temperature is sitting on 28 degree’s Celsius, humidity on 50%. Wind direction is coming out of the SE @ 11 – 14knot+
Today’s G-Land Surf Report thanks to our friends at the G-Land Surf Camp was calling wave height in the solid 6ft range. With the best waves on the bottom end of Kong’s and down through Money Tree’s. At 9.00AM (East Java time) there were 10 surfers in the water on Money Tree’s, surfing conditions were clean and glassy.
Traffic Up Date; Well the silly season (high season) is already apon us here in Bali. With a combination of international and domestic school holidays the traffic in and out of the Kuta to Seminyak area is total kaos. Starting from around 2.00PM and running through until 9.00PM. I went into town the night before last and even riding my motor cycle the traffic was insane.
