Kandui Surf Resort Mentawai Islands
Sep. 22nd surf report.
Things got off to a slow start with this trip. The wind was back and the swell was not too big. We were surfing everyday at Beng Beng and 4 Bobs, but it was pretty uneventful. A nice sized swell filled in yesterday though. It was pretty south so the waves were not very big at the places that take this southeast wind, but we got some fun ones at Kandui’s, Hideaways, and Beng Beng. Today, the wind swirled around a bit and some other spots started working. I was talking to a surf guide from another resort and he commented how he actually had to put on the thinking cap and figure out which wave to go to today! It’s pretty much been a no brainer for weeks on which waves were working with all this trade like southeast wind blowing, but today there were pretty much waves everywhere and it was hard to choose! We surfed around the resort in the morning, and the guys got a few at Rifles (one picture attached), but it was a bit busy so they headed for a left we surf when the conditions are right. They scored! There were only a few other guys out who had been surfing it all morning, so they bailed and left it to our guys. Nice! (Gotta say that like Mike Tyson.) Pictures attached. Meanwhile, our other boat when to Nipusi and Bankvaults. Conditions there were very good there and there were only a handful of guys out at both spots. Score again! The guys had a great time at Nipusi with very few others out and lots of bombs! Photos attached. Since the camera was at Nipusi, there were no photos taken at Bankvaults, but, you can take it from me, there were a few sweet barrels. Everyone got back and saw each other’s photos and were confused about which spot would have been the best to go to, but the truth was that there were just good waves everywhere today! This swell should fade pretty quickly, then a more westely swell is due to fill in.
