Kandui Surf Resort Mentawai Islands
10th March
We’ve had some weather roll through these past few days and it’s been admittedly pretty tough to get any quality waves. There has been some surf, but it’s been mostly sloppy wind swell. Things are looking up though as the wind has been backing off and a new, long period ground swell is on the rise. We surfed Nipussi all morning. Conditions were good and the swell was increasing as the day went on with some legitimate bombs coming in later in the session. We had the place to ourselves as the boats that were in the area surfed Bankvaults. It was ok up there as well, but still a bit wobbly from all the wind we’ve had. It was cleaner at Nipusi with no one else so we enjoyed the morning there. The wind started swirling around in the afternoon and it was an adventure being in the right place at the right time, but we got a few waves at 4 Bobs and Beng Beng as the swell continued to rise. Hopes are high as the swell is supposed to hang around tomorrow and the winds are forecast to back off even more.
6th March 2012
Sorry for the lack of updates folks! We’ve been so busy around here getting ready for the 2012 season and all that I just couldn’t seem to find the time. We’ve had an above average off season, I would say, with consistent little swells and a nice swell a few weeks ago when Rifles actually had 2 days worth of overhead barrels and only a handful of takers. It looks like the swells will keep coming for our first set of guests who arrived yesterday on our boat the Ombak Indah. We had some work done to her in the off season and added another 200 horsepower engine, giving us a total of 600 horse. It made the crossing in 3 hours with glassy conditions. Nice!
Our first day was a good one. There is only one boat in the area and only a few other people staying on land so we are surfing by ourselves or with a pretty light crowd. We had a little swell running and our first canoe hit Nipusi which was clean and well overhead on the sets. Our second boat headed to Beng Beng where the westish swell was getting in surprisingly well and our guys got some overhead waves there too. Everyone got back to the resort after noon, pretty tired and already sunburned. We almost called it a day, but then got a second wind after lunch and made a late run to Burgerworld to get a few fun waves there as well. We cracked some Bintangs on the way back to the resort and sealed up the first day of the season. Not a bad one at that.
Looks like it will be smaller tomorrow, but plenty of swell is on the way for the upcoming week. We are expecting some weather as well so we have our fingers crossed that our favorite spots will be clean. Sorry for the lack of updates folks!
