BALI
16th January 2013
Hello again, thanks for dropping into the baliwaves.com (The original Bali surf report since 1999) for today’s news and views on surfing and weather conditions from right here on the always in season tropical surfing holiday destination of BALI.
Kicking off the game with my morning surf recon on the Outer Reefs here in Tuban. Wave height between Kuta Reef and Airport Left has dropped off a little more but there was still some semi clean 1-3 footers showing. Only 1 lone surfer on Kuta Reef and I didn’t see anyone on Middle’s. Airport Left was picking up the bigger set waves and there was a few riders out there.
Ketut has taken another run back up to Canggu and has phoned through to say that like yesterday the left hand reef in front of the cafe’s at Echo beach was again producing some nice little waves in the 2-3ft+ sector. Still not enough water for the left hand “sand bar” or right hander on the river mouth. Here’s something I had a laugh at earlier. Yesterday I was on the scene at Canggu for 4 hours shooting the best waves that were on offer, as I do at every location I visit. Simply my goal is to show you the best waves that Bali has on offer. One guy queried me why my photos from yesterday were so good but on another Bali “surf report” website they depicted crap surf at the same location. He actually thought I was faking my report, LOL. I actually happened to be on the scene when the other “surf photographer” turned up, he was there for 3 minutes, took maybe 10 photos of the first and closest waves that came through “sand bar” and then left straight away to get their photos on line. That’s not what we do sorry, but I think most of you regulars no it already.
We’ll get Ketut’s photos on line for ya’s after lunch, so stick around.
Knowing where to go, at what time, tide and wind direction is what it’s all about. So is knowing what conditions best suit the location. I’ve basically been a surf bum all my life, groomed for this position you might say, I have spent a lot of years surfing and staring at the waves and oceans. I also helped one of the pioneers of a major surf report website in the USA calibrate their surf forecasting tool, LOLA for Indonesia. I used to count off periods and swell directions and then feed it back to Sean Collins, so they could inturn make their adjustments, that was back in 1999 or there abouts.
Anyone can take a surfing photo these days, but only a surfer can take a surfing photo and make it composed.
Weather wise outside today here on the holiday island there is some light cloud and high up cloud but it’s basically just another summers day in Bali. Temperature wise right now at 11.00AM the mercury is sitting on 29 degree’s Celsius with the Humidity at 79%. Wind direction is now coming out of the West at 5-8knot.
