Friday 31, March – Kuta, Lombok: Rip Curl Gromsearch Series was on the road again this weekend in Seger Beach Lombok for the 4th event of the Indonesian Series. The Rip Curl Team were greeted with a warm welcome of frothing local Groms all excited to surf in the championships at their local beach and to win tickets to the National Finals to take place in Bali later this year.
The dreamy light-blue water of Segar Beach offered perfect conditions for the Groms with 2 to 4 foot waves pushed by a strong offshore wind and a blazing sun.
This 4th series was undoubtedly one that received the greatest number of participants, with 60 Grom’s battling it out in the fun conditions supported by more than 100 parents and friends.
People were very excited at the beach and the warm and friendly atmosphere contributed to a great weekend. “Thank you to have chosen Lombok as one of the Rip Curl GromSearch Series stop over’s. All the Grommets have been ripping!” commented one of the local Groms from the area.
Ketut Agus was in sensational form on the day, blazing in his Under 14’s final heat with 13.5 points scooping first place before Ben Benson (6.3 points), Arpad (6.2 points) and Tensi (5.7 points). In the Under the 16’s division the phenomenal Reef Doig nailed a huge heat total of 13.4 points, winning the first place honours against his friends Raju Sena (12.7), Yein (11.5) and Arzan Kurt (11.2).
Hayana was electric throughout the day’s competition, eventually posting an excellent score of 11 points leading her on the road to the National Finals in Bali in September. Taina, Giada Legati and Maria’s powerful maneuvers brought them respectively to second, third and fourth place in the Girls’ division.
During the expression session, rampaging surfers Hamzah and M. Rifai won Top Honors for best wave and best trick.
Moreover, National final Tickets were distributed to two local Groms as a reward for their impressive performance. The first ticket to finals was given to the inspirational M. Rifai from Grupuk and the second one to the energetic Habib from Kuta, Lombok.
In addition to this memorable surfing experience, Grommets participated in the usual Beach clean up at the end of the day in association with GUS foundation. The clean up is arranged at every GromSearch event to help educate families to take care and preserve the beach and surrounding environment. Every kid seemed to take this effort into careful consideration as they managed to collect the waste efficiently in a short time. One funny fact is that when the awards occurred, super excited Groms ambushed Rip Curl Contest Director Dedi Gun, failing to bring him down but making him losing one of his flip-flops in the process. Dedi commented: “It was a great trip to Lombok and a good event with impressive Groms and a very good vibe! Thank you very much to South Lombok Board riders for helping us in the organization of this 4th GromSearch series in Kuta, Lombok!”
Next Rip Curl GromSearch will be held in the beautiful white-sand beach of Pancer Door in Pacitan, East Java, one of the most challenging surfing spots of Indonesia with world-class waves. Rip Curl is looking for young and fresh talents to build the next generation of upcoming surfers, so… Let the Grommets rule!
