The Real Kandui Surf Resort Mentawai Islands
April 10th surf report.
Now we’re talking! The storm is gone, the swell his here, and things are looking the way they should around here! The waves were bombing in front of the resort by mid morning and I could pass on any of the thousands of pictures we took out at Karambat Left and Four Bobs, but it’s hard to do that when you are holding pictures of roping barrels! Everyone was milling around the playgrounds hoping for Rifles to get clean, but a few of us at the resort finally pulled the plug and went over to see what Bankvaults was doing. What it was doing was firing! Offshore winds had cleaned up the waves after a storm blew past earlier and onshore slop was transformed into beautiful tubes. And only 3 other other guys were out! It had some leftover, side shore lump, but that just added to the adventure and the beauty. The other 3 surfers left and it was just our little group out there, trading waves and talking non stop about how we were in the best place on the planet! Surfed till dark, then tossed Bintangs on the way home. Nice.
April 8th surf report.
I’m convinced our area is the most consistent place for quality surf in the world (except for Bali of course). But even with that said, we can have an off trip. There was a storm spinning off to our west for much of this last trip and that gave us some strong winds to work around as we hunted for waves. But we still surfed everyday bar one, and that is more than I can say for many surf trips I have taken before I started to come to the Mentawais! We’ve surfed Bankvaults for the last couple of days and have gotten lucky with windows of good conditions. It was a little mixed up, but our guys managed to get some fun waves and even some barrels. Jason Borte pictured, making the best of a below average trip. Our current guests leave for home tomorrow and this next trip looks good with better weather forecasts and a couple of swells in the pipeline.
