The Real Kandui Surf Resort Mentawai Islands
April 30th surf report.
We had a nice run, but it abruptly came to a end yesterday. Our swell pretty much fell off the map and the winds were not ideal for the spots that are good with the small swell. No one was frothing though because the last few days have been pretty good. I attached a picture of Beng Beng from a couple of days ago. That’s pretty much as good as it gets and our guests had it to themselves for hours on end. Not bad. The guys managed to find some motivation by afternoon though and rallied a boat to go to Burgerworld, which ended up being a good call because there was no one else out there and the waves were actually pretty clean and fun. Our latest guests took off this morning into a glassy, flat ocean. Satisfied customers. Our new guests arrive this evening and they are looking at some Burgerworld in there near future, but things are looking up for the second half of their trip. Maybe way up!
April 28th surf report
We woke up to howling winds and rain this morning. We were antsy to get back to Bankvaults, but had to wait the storm out. By mid morning conditions had improved and by late morning conditions could not have been better! Light offshores again and the swell was a little bigger and more consistent than yesterday. No complaints there! The crowd factor was better today as well and we got some great waves. Surfed it until the on shores mercifully came in as we were hungry, thirsty, and tired. And, against all odds, the other half of our crew when back to Beng Beng and scored again! Hours surfing to themselves and it was pretty much as good as Beng Beng gets. Beating the odds even more, we had a third boat with a few guests that wanted to surf Nipusi. It was crowded so they went to Dog Reef and surfed there by themselves, then came back to Nipusi and caught a window with no one out and they surfed that by themselves! We’ve either been lucky or smart these last couple of days because there is no shortage of surfers around, but we will take either one! We’ve had a good run. Expecting smaller surf tomorrow.
April 27th surf report
Things have been looking up since the last report. A new swell arrived and the winds have been lighter so surfers have been able to spread out to different waves. Some of our crew headed for Bankvaults at dawn, but it had a good amount of morning sickness going on. It was still fun, although not ideal. The crowd was a little thick, but our guests that wanted Bankvaults were capable of handling that situation and got their share. We went back there again in the afternoon and conditions had improved substantially. We saw a set just as we pulled up and couldn’t get out of the boat fast enough! Light offshores and barreling with some sets going well overhead. Everyone got some good ones. Photos attached. Meanwhile, the other half of our guests that wanted a little mellower wave went to Beng Beng and scored! They hit a good window where no one was out but them and they surfed it for hours like that. Meanwhile again, anyone that stayed around the resort enjoyed near empty Playgrounds midday, glassy and fun. I don’t think there was anyone that wasn’t pretty stoked by the end of the day. Looking for possibly bigger swell tomorrow.
