9th June 2013, PADMA BEACH – Bali: This Sunday was packed with frothing grommets competing in GromSearch series #8 to win the top honours that will lead them to the National Finals next September.
Despite the strong current, Groms realised impulsive maneuvers in the 4 to 5 feet unfurling left and right handers throughout the day. “It’s an insane event, waves are solid and the intense competitive atmosphere is amazing. I’m stoked to be here judging with Padma Boardriders” commented Rip Curl Team rider Garut Widiarta.
In the “Under 16’s ” division, local Padma Grom Raju Sena steamrolled through to an impressive victory (16.75 points) over Reef Doig (10.25 points), Riman Jayadi (8.65 points) and Rio Waida (6.8 points)
Kian Martin won top place honours (16.9 points) in the “Under 14 years old” division, with incredible strong and critical turns, followed closely by Ketut Agus (15.4 points), Ben (9.25 points) and Rory Macdonald (2.4 points). In the same division little 5 year old Kalana surprised everyone with some impressive surfing and style that led him to win the 4th place of Round 1. It was his first time surfing in the event and a promising start to his future surfing career. Watch out for this Grom in coming years!
In addition to the boys performances, the Girls showed their determination and willingness to get amongst the powerful and heavy waves. Cinta Hansel – one of the smallest Groms – was yet again the star of the show proving that size doesn’t matter, taking down her competitors in waves double her height. Cinta qualified for first place (9.6 points) with powerful manoeuvers over Hayana (7.65 points), Dea (7.2 points) and Summa (6.65 points).
The GromSearch Expression Session was run in the late afternoon, leading Jonni to win first position boosting a huge aerial for the judges. Following closely was Padma Boys Team captain “Winnie” who took out the best wave award pulling into a huge close–out barrel narrowly making it.
Due to the fact that some riders already won previous GromSearch tickets to the National finals, Kusuma Tanabe, Rian Vonikal, Wayan Andika and Rossi received the 4 available spots and a chance to compete against the other regional winners in GromSearch National finals in September 2013.
Overall, the event was run in great conditions, with pumping waves in the middle of the day, rampaging surfers, good music and a sick atmosphere. The day ended-up with the usual beach clean-up with the Padma Boardriders taking part in collecting waste to preserve their beach providing a great example to others.
“Thanks to all Padma Boardriders for bringing great vibes and involvement to this stop of the series. Once again, Rip Curl GromSearch proved to be the highlight event of the month with over 80 frothing Grommets showing up from all over Indonesia to take part! Thanks also to our sponsors for all the giveaways and their support” said contest director Dylan Amar.
The last GromSearch stop of this years series will be held at World Famous Kuta Beach on August 25th providing one more chance for 4 lucky Groms to win places into the National Finals in September.
