BALI
7th – 8th July 2014
Hello surfers and welcome back to your baliwaves (bringing you a small taste of Bali since 1999) for the latest news and best views on surfing and weather conditions from here on the only sane choice for your next hard earned tropical surfing holiday dollar, Bali.
Ok so our current photo gallery (50+ strong) has been shot over on the East Coast at Keramas yesterday the 7th and again early this morning the 8th.
Yesterday the 7th and Ketut was rolled into the Keramas car park at 8.15AM to find the waves still clean and glassy at chest to head high plus. Not to mention that there were only 10 or so surfers in the area, these days that’s a very rare thing to find at Keramas with all the development happening over there.
This morning the 8th and I thought we’d slip back over there again, this time a little earlier. So as it panned out we arrived at 7.00AM to find that wave height was still in the 2-3ft+ sector but with the wind already starting to gust out of the ENE at 10knot. This morning there were already 20 surfers in the line up, but we were already there so we made the most of it.
Weather wise today it was real wintery for what we are used to over here at this time of the year. From the time it was light enough to see there were big black rain filled clouds in most directions. Over on the East coast we missed most of the heavy stuff but still had some light rain (bad weather for photography that’s for certain). Then around 8.30 or earlier the SE Trade wind (on shore east side) started to kick fully into gear with gusts of up to 20knot and totally trashing the waves at Keramas.
Swell alert, the swell prediction charts are still showing our next new swell system still on track and ready to slam into Bali late tomorrow night. So Thursday is looking like it’s going to be very solid and the possibility of the 2014 Padang Padang RipCurl Cup running.
Travel Tip # 875, Ok look you’ll read on many websites and surf guide books about bringing extra cakes of wax and leg ropes and standard stuff like that. When in actual fact all that “extra” stuff can be found here in any of Bali’s surf shops and usually cheaper than what it costs you at your home surf shop right. So here’s just 5 items that you really need to bring with you.
1. patience
2. good manners
3. friendly smiles
4. respect
5. *common sense
Once upon a time traveling surfers were like a band of brothers, always being friendly and helpful to a fellow surfer. These days I’m seeing more and more zombie surfers around Bali. The type of people that have absolutely no intention of a simple friendly “hello” when passing by. Remember you are an ambassador of your country at all times once you leave it.
I know a guy that wants to sell 25% share of a resort in the Mentawai Islands, directly in front of Lances Left. You can see what the deal is at: http://www.surfersjournal.com/surf_property/kingfisher
