Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge Day 1
Hello surfers and thanks for dropping into the baliwaves (keeping you in the loop with Indo since back in 1999) for our latest news and the best views on surfing and weather conditions from here on the “always got waves” tropical surfing holiday destination of Bali.
Ok so yesterday Ketut and I hung our down at Uluwatu for the Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge which this year is a QS 1000pt event for the WSL and presented by Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and the Australian Embassy Jakarta. The morning weather wasn’t the best and it even rained on and off for 30 mins. But the quality of the 3-4ft+ waves more than made up for that. The morning session was through the high tide and wave height was pushing the double head high range on the bigger set waves hitting the Main Peak through to the top of the Racetrack section.
It was local surfer V local surfer for the first round of trial heats to see who would be going through the main even and the local boys were going off in the near perfect waves. By the time round 1 of the main event started the tide was getting lower and the Racetrack was starting to deliver those long and deep barrels it’s renowned for. We had to bail out from the contest around 2.30PM so we missed the last few heats of the day unfortunately.
Today the 14th and I got Ketut to head back down to Uluwatu for Day 2 of the event, while I headed up to Canggu to see what the waves were like and to get some get a few waves. Wave height at Canggu this morning was a solid 3-4ft with a couple of freaky double head high set waves hitting Echo and the River mouth. As usual at Canggu there was no shortage of surfers on all 3 of the main sections. I never made it there until 8.30AM and even then the wind was still blowing off shore for the first 30 minutes of my session before the SE (on shore at Canggu) Trade wind kicked in and slowly got stronger and stronger.
Looking South to “Old Mans” and Batu Bolong it looked like surf school city big big time.
Ketut came home with over 1000 photos from Day 2 of the Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge so I’ll do my best to get some of those gems on line for ya’s ASAP.
I’ve also got more photos from Bingin (ESP) and another batch of photos and reports from G-Land (Joyo’s) to get on line so make sure you check back in a little later on.
