Round 1 and Opening Festivities Get Rote Open International Surfing Competition Underway at Bo’a Beach, Rote Island
8 November 2015, Nemberala, Rote Island-Indonesia: The 2015 Rote Open International Surfing Competition got underway today at Bo’a Beach on the scenic East Indonesian Island of Rote in excellent 3-4 foot surf, completing Round 1 of the Men’s Open Division as well as the afternoon festivities that saw Rote Islands Regent Mr. Lens Hanning officially opening the event along with speeches, local dances, music, and food for the attendees.
In the opening round it was local Ady Lenggu posting the mornings highest single wave score of 7.83 (out of a possible 10 points), as well as the highest combined heat score of 13.33 points (out of a possible 20 points) to advance into Round 2, which will kick off tomorrow morning at 6:30 am.
A total of 28 local surfers competed in Round 1 today, vying for spots in Round 2, which will see the remaining 16 coming up against 12 ASC surfers and 4 others as the field narrows down towards what is sure to be another exciting day of competition.
The 2015 Rote Open will be the final event on the ASC tour calendar, and will be the deciding event for the Men’s Open Division championship, as current points leader Raditya Rondi is being challenged by last year’s champion Dede Suryana from West Java in a down to the wire race.
Both will be under tremendous pressure both tomorrow and the following day, as the Padma Boy twins from Legian, Made Darmayasa and Darmaputra Tonjo were positively blowing up in the early morning and late afternoon free surf sessions at Bo’a today and looking to take home the Rp 15,000,000 first place prize money.
The 2015 Rote Open will run thru the 11th of November at the spectacular righthander of Bo’a Beach on the island of Rote, as an ASC Grade 2 event with a total prize purse of Rp 62,500,000 (approximately $4,500 USD) up for grabs between the Men’s Open and Women’s Open divisions as well as valuable ASC champioship points.
The 2015 Rote Open International Surfing Competition is sponsored by the Tourism Department of NTT, the Tourism Department of Rote, Bo’a Beach Resort & Villas, Nemberala Beach Resort, Bintang Beer, Bank BRI, Sunbrella, and sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Championships.
