Nias Weekly Surf Report 22-29 Aug 2017
By Mark Flint from the deck of KabuNohi Sorake Resort, Lagundri Bay
Tuesday 22nd Aug: Offshore morning and the sun is shining. Waves dropped back to 4ft with 5-foot sets. It’s slow in Nias at present with little people around so everyone is casual and enjoying the surfing fun
Onshore during the middle of the day with the wind and swell dropping back off the afternoon with a few 3 footers still breaking out the point.
Wednesday 23rd Aug: Wind in early from SE and waves small for the start of the day. Steady trade winds means onshore throughout the day. The occasional 4-foot set making for fun conditions for high performance surfing to perform floaters and launch some airs off the little ramps. Late Arvo glass off (LAGO) for the finish of the day. This is the start of a SE onshore wind stream with overcast skies. Some alternate activities during the middle of days when onshores are strongest so we do a market tour for our Californian guest.
Thursday 24th Aug: Onshore in the early morning and waves still around 3 foot and surf able for launching and floaters. Cloud cover makes it cool. Small Waves continue throughout the day with a swell pulse in the afternoon. Wind stream remains from the ESE
Friday 25th Aug: Offshore morning, sun shining and waves dropped back to 2-3 feet. Quiet times with very few surfers about in Sorake at present. The waves remain steady throughout the day with the afternoon glassing off with waves to 3 feet on sets from the outside break running through to Kiddies Corner. #flyboynias action happening directly in front of the KabuNohi deck with the grommets dominating the shallow Rice Bowl section.
Saturday 26th Aug: Slight ESE winds early morning with decrease in swell and wave action still breaking on the outside keyhole section (The Point) but very small and fat with the morning tide. There’s more waves to be had on the Kiddies Corner section and down into the Rice Bowl section. It’s like an aquatic skate/fun park out there with some high performance action from the local kids and the lucky few visitors.

Sunday 27th Aug: Onshore ESE wind stream and waves small for this Sunday. The wind drops back with waves running through from the outside and connecting all the way to Kiddies corner and into Rice Bowl section. When you get one from outside point to Rice Bowl it’s a leg burning yet super fun ride with a long paddle back or jump out and walk back around to save the arms. The Indo/Chinese non surfing tourists are walking the reef taking selfies and posing for photos in front of the surf. (see photos). A very pleasant Sunday in Sorake.
Our Californian guest kicks back in the hammock reading his book and enjoying the relax before heading home tomorrow.
Monday 28th Aug: Small surf continues with slight onshore breeze & very low swell activity for this week predicted. Waves in the 3-4-foot range with little power on the outside section and more activity down in the super fun Kiddies corner & Rice Bowl sections. This is keeping surfers occupied whilst they wait for the next swell. We have a couple arriving today from Pulau Telos who are doing a combo Telos/Nias trip.
Tuesday 29th Aug: Offshore morning and a bright sunny day with a slight increase in wave size on the outside keyhole section with very clean conditions. Wind picks up to slight from SE during the day.
Until Next week, Mark Flint signing off from Lagundri Bay, Nias
