BALI / INDONESIA
4th – 5th May 2018
Hello surfers and welcome back to the baliwaves (doing our best to keep you up to date with Bali’s surfing scene since back in 1999) for the start of another surfing week, and our latest news and the best possible views on surfing and weather conditions. From here on the World’s No.1 tropical surfing holiday destination and gateway to Indonesia’s surfing paradise, Bali.
Just to get the show on the road here’s another fresh photo gallery to feast your eyes on that we shot up along Bali’s West Coast. As I mentioned in our last surf report, surfing conditions were clean and tidy before the SE Trade wind kicked in around 9.30AM.
The weekend just gone has had us surfing on both coasts of Bali. Saturday we thought we’d try one of our old favorite locations of Canggu. Arriving to find wave height in the 1-3ft+ range and no shortage of *surfers. Crowd wise it was like a can of sardines and the surf was pretty average with the SE Tradey kicking in around the 9.00AM mark blowing cross / on shore when it did. It was also a personal worst with driving time on the way home, taking almost 2 hours instead of the normal 45 mins. So if your staying at Canggu and need to get to the airport or anywhere important make sure you allow for bad traffic from the Sunset Rd to By Pass Rd / airport.
Weather wise it’s been another hot and sunny weekend here in Bali and that’s about all we will be getting for the next 6 months or so as we enter into Bali’s “Dry Season”
Sunday morning we thought we’d slip over to the East Coast and see if there was any swell sneaking into Serangan. Arriving just after sun rise to find some nice waves in the waist to well over head high range and a clean off shore wind. There was only 3 surfers in the water so my friend and I soon made it 5 in total. The only thing we did not see was any of the old and iconic surfers warungs that have provided food, drinks, friendships and shelter for the last 20 years or so. The time had arrived since they were first informed months ago of the pending development of Serangan. Sad to see and the end of another part of Bali’s surfing history levelled.
This morning the 7th and right now at 7.30AM we have good looking day coming on for the lucky ones here on vacation. There is some cloud building up down to the Souther end of the island, but we won’t be seeing any rain here in the Kuta area. Our morning surf check on the Outer Reefs of Tuban was still only shopwing wave height in the 1-3ft range on Kuta Reef and Airport Left with some slightly bigger set waves hitting Middle Reef. Hopefully we will see a little more size start to show as the tide starts to run in around mid morning, fingers crossed.
The next tide today will be a weak 1.1mtr Low at 7.30AM, then a 1.9mtr High at 1.33PM
Swell Predictions well according to our favorite website for calling in the swell the Indian Ocean looks to be alive with medium to moderate sized swell systems. But you never can tell unless you take a good look at all the variables involved. The pretty colored graphics don’t always tell it as it is and we need to scratch a little deeper into the swell forecasting tools available. But we can also go with the old “fingers crossed” we will be seeing plenty of waves (as always) over the next week here in Bali and across Indonesia.
