Bali / Indonesia
24th November 2018
Hello everyone and thanks again for tuning into the baliwaves (we have been keeping you in the loop with Bali and other parts of Indonesia since back in 1999).
Just to bring you up to scratch it’s been tough here for us the last month since a sleepy young truck driver from Lombok actually fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into the back of my car while we were on route to get some waves. At the time we were pretty dumb and trusted the trucking company (Bali based “SB”) after they promised to cover all costs and provide us with a rental car until my car was repaired. Well almost 5 weeks later the SB company based at Klungkung are un contactable and appear to have reneged on their promise. So I’m quite a bit of cash out of pocket, but lucky enough I did have my insurance to cover the damages to my car. But the rental cars have been coming out of my pocket..
Anyway if all goes to plan we should have our trusty set of wheels back from the dealer today and everything can get back to normal again. It’s a bit tricky and not to mention dangerous riding around on a motorbike with expensive camera equipment on wet and slippery roads, not to mention the comfort factor right.
But in the mean time here’s a collage of photos from all over Bali and a couple of other islands as well. Some of you should recognize some of the people and some of the places, the newer viewers won’t but have more than likely seen or been to some of these locations. Some places have been pulled down and resorts built over the top, trees cut down and parking lots been built to replace. There was a lot more Bali Aloha back as short as 15 – 20 years ago. Before everyone wanted a piece of the new wave Euro / Chinese / Russian dollar pie grab. Not only here on Bali but most of the islands with waves and airport access. I guess that’s where surfing has taken the best parts of Indo to these days. But anyway the Bali I love is still deep inside me and always will be.
There’s even a handful of photos from my early days of visiting Lakey Peak over on the island of Sumbawa. I have had some great times over there hanging out with my local friends over the years. I can remember I used to be invited to a different friends place for dinner just about every night of the week when I was ever there. The people used to be so poor, but always happy, a lot of the houses only had dirt floors inside. But still I was so happy to sit down for a meal with them, and practice the local language of Bimanese. Even though I used to also get the red carpet treatment off my good friend Mr Gede Sudante who owned the famous Aman Gati Hotel that was right in front of Peak. I think I have been to Lakey’s through every different month of the year, good times and nice local folk back then. With the help of an Australian surfboard riders club I also handed over the Lakey Peak Boardriders Club their first lycra contest shirts.
Outside right now here in Tuban at 9.17AM it’s just stopped raining, but plenty of cloud left. The wind is only light and variable and still plenty of waist to head high plus waves on offer at most locations here on the West Coast. The next tide will be a 2.3mtr High at 10.31AM so conditions will get a bit lumpy and fat as it fills in.
Ok then crew have a good one and stay tuned into the original Bali surf report website cause we’ll be out there tomorrow for a Sunday Session here on the happy little holiday island of Bali. Feel free to contact us if you have aby questions about surfing in Bali and we will do our best to help out.
