BALI / INDONESIA
23rd – 24th April 2017
Hello everyone and thanks for stopping by the baliwaves (keeping you in the loop with Bali’s surfing scene since back in 1999) for our latest news and the best possible views on surfing and weather conditions from right here on the World’s most wave riddled tropical surfing holiday destination, Bali.
Ok well we hope everyone has had a good weekend and ready to go for another surfing week here on the baliwaves. Yesterday I ended up taking a run down to Indonesia’s premier surfing location of Uluwatu. I got off to a late start from home and by the time I got to Jimbaran McD’s I knew there was something going on with the traffic starting to bank up and lots of Balinese dressed in the Temple attire (white). Anyway around 2hrs later I made it to the warungs over looking Uluwatu. Traffic jams don’t worry me especially when they have anything to do with our Hindu religion.
Wave height down at Ulu was a nice sized 3-5ft and maybe even a couple of slightly bigger freak sets hitting the Main Peak. Too bad the wind was still a light and variable on shore while I was on the scene. But I did get the mail that by the afternoon Low tide Racetrack was barreling itself inside out, as I knew it would be. But Uluwatu on a Sunday afternoon is a whole different ball game these days. With bus loads of Chinese and Indonesian domestic tourists galore, plus all the other International tourists getting into sun set beer drinking mode. Weather wise it was terrible from a photographic perspective with lots of cloud cover as it shows in the photos.
This morning the 24th and we have another public holiday across Indonesia today with Hari Raya Islam. We also have a nice little boost in wave height this morning to go with it. Our 7.30AM surf check on the Outer Reefs of Tuban was showing wave height in the 2-4ft+ range breaking on all 3 sections from Kuta Reef, Middle Reef and Airport Left. I’d also have to say that there would be a few sly ones around the other side of the Airport runway.
Surfing conditions at the time were still a bit wonky with the wind coming light out of the NW. Hopefully we will see her swing to the SE sometime soon. The nextr tide today over here is going to be a solid 2.4mtr High just after 8.30AM. Tomorrow also brings a New Moon so get ready for some big tidal differences over the next 4-5 days.
Ok silly season is almost apon us here in Bali and remember if you don’t ride a motor bike where you live DON’T RIDE ONE IN BALI unless you want to risk your life. The last few days I have seen some real scary stuff with young westerners wobbling all over the road. On the way home from Uluwatu yesterday I also saw 2 different accidents involving young girls who had crashed their bikes without even hitting anything, lucky girls. The Police were also having a good day yesterday, checking for motor cycle license’s in two different alocations on the bukit. No License, you will be paying for it one way or another.
Weather wise outside right now at 8.20AM we have a mostly blue sky and a nice looking day of sun and surf coming on for the lucky people here in Bali.
Ketut is back on board with us again today and I have sent him over to Keramas to see whats happening at the Mad Huey’s QS1000 surfing contest that is going down at Keramas (always seems to be a contest of some sort happening there these days). So hopefully he’s going to get us some good photos to check out, so stay tuned.
Ok friends I’m just waiting for the tide to start running out and the wind to swing than hitting the Outer Reefs for some fun.
While your here make sure you check out all our sponsors / advertisers and help us by supporting them as well, thanks again for dropping into the baliwaves
