BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
24th June 2020
Firstly we do know from first hand experience how tough it is here in Bali with absolutely no support other than friends and family. We would also like to offer a free promotional service to any other small outfits / businesses that are surf related here in Indonesia and Australia. So in turn we have told all our sponsors that we will be waving any fee’s until things are getting back to normal again. Please contact us to see if your eligible for free promotion on baliwaves. Special thanks to our good friends that have kicked in some dollars to help my family and I keep food on our table, lights on and baliwaves.com being able to help keep you in the loop.
baliwaves.com is happy to be able to give our friends at JOWA SURF a little love with some promo on us. As we mention above times are tough and we are here to help any small local business with a little more awareness through baliwaves.com
Hello friends and welcome back to the baliwaves (the original Bali surf report since right back in 1999). Right so sorry I’ve been “off line” the last few days. I actually snuck out for what I thought would be an early and uncrowded surf at Kuta Reef a couple a days back. Just to keep my sanity, so to speak. But in reality it was mayhem. Pretty much as crowded as the most crowded day Kuta Reef has seen. There were kids and grown men getting pushed into waves. But I did manage to just barely get a few waves and as always just being out in the ocean aways lowers the stress levels right. It’s hard to pick it at the moment here on the Outer Reefs, some mornings the numbers are good and others it’s out of control.
Further down South at Balangan I’ve heard the numbers haven’t been too bad but it’s also a “lucky dip” with today’s crew of Coronavites that have stayed on in Bali it seems they are using a grapevine of sorts to mass up. Bingin by all accounts has also been cranking on the lower end of the tide and plenty of surfers down there getting barreled and dragged across the reef. Over on the East coast y friends tell me that Keramas has also been getting plenty of action on some of the early morning glass off’s when the tide is right.
So, there you have it it does seem that the surfing restrictions are being eased at most locations. I even heard that Legian beach has been open for the morning session between 6-9am.
Yesterday the 23rd my family and I took the car out for a run as she hasn’t been out for months. So we thought we would drive up to our family mountain side village and take what ever supplies we could spare for our family up there. There is no tourism in this area but I can honestly say even that the folks in our village are extremely poor in money they are very rich in culture and families and that old fashioned Bali Aloha. Driving over on the main East coast highway I couldn’t really believe just how much traffic was on the road. It was as if there is no life threatening pandemic going on. Or maybe just a lot of people were ignoring the danger and getting on with business.
But out of the hustle and bustle of Sanur and Gianyar the traffic started to slow down and get back to that pace you often find in the country anywhere in the World. Another thing that stood out the further away from “town” we got was the bigger presence of security checks. Just about every turn off each village had their local Banjars policing entry into their villages. When it came time for us to turn off the one lane highway and start climbing up Mt Agung we were also stopped (even though we knew the security force on guard) and checked for masks, we also had the car disinfected before we could continue.
Today’s photo gallery was shot over on the East coast a few years back, around tens years back to be precise. This spot was always one of my favorite waves to surf and always the best option for an un crowded dawn patrol with friends. Now it’s another hard to get to location that you have to go in almost blind and hope for the best. Oh yeah and cough up 10 bucks for the boat ride inn there. Like I’ve mentioned above this place is also now another “lucky dip” but ya never know if ya don’t go hey.
Today here in South Kuta the wind (Easterly Trade wind) was up kinda early, kicking in around 7.30am. I did hear from some friends that surfed out at Kuta Reef that it was again a little crowded and a little too windy. Wave height was in the 2-3ft+ range. Early morning Low tide didn’t really help the cause much either.
Weather wise outside right now we have a mostly blue sky with the midday temperature a warm 29 degree’s Celsius, probably a lot warmer if your out of the wind, if that is possible. The Trade wind is gusting up to 20knot plus out of the East. The next tide today will be a reef exposing 0.1mtr Low just before sunset at 6.01pm.
Swell predictions are looking like tomorrow it should be similar as today, maybe down a smidgen before a new medium sized swell hits sometime Friday. Then further out another slightly bigger swell arriving at the end of the month or 1st of July. Even further out there is another big swell generating system out in the middle of the Indian Ocean behind that.
With all my fishing buddies here in Bali doing it hard I thought I’d also throw up a few old and new photos from some of our Bali sport fishing exploits. Plus a couple of classics of my old fishing partner (RIP) who, when it came to fishing and I do mean any type of fishing he was the man here in Bali. Right now everyone has been servicing their traditional fishing boats “Jukung” getting ready for our annual fishing season to begin, myself included. My boat is still a couple off weeks out but I sure will be looking forward to eating some fresh fish with my family again soon. Feel free to contact us here at baliwaves if any of you would like to come out for a day sport fishing with some of Bali’s best fishermen. https://www.baliwaves.com/category/surf-report/fishing/
On the Bali Corona Virus situation Bali continues to have some problems in certain parts of the island and the number of infections is slowly rising. Currently here we have had a total of 1116 positive cases with 639 of these recovered and 9 people sadly have died. Hopefully we get back on top of this and start to get more control and containment so we can open out airports and get you all back here on the island of the God’s once again. I did read that an Indonesian company is starting to mass produce the “PCR” test kits here and that soon we will see some real “mass testing” happening.
Ok thanks again for staying with the baliwaves, it won’t be much longer and we can close the archive folders and get back to some day to day photos / videos and reports from all around the island.
Back soon
