Monday 22nd January
Here we are on the first day of the 6 star Hurley Pro Junior at Burleigh Heads. The waves are about 2-3 foot with an east wind putting a bit of chop into it. Nonetheless the waves are still fun with fun sections being demolished by the boys.
Mustafa unfortunately came stuck in his heat, and though the commentators were raving about his backhand attack it wasn’t quite enough to get him through.
Dylan impressed the whole stretch of spectators as turn after turn saw him win his heat and progress into the next round of the Hurley Pro Junior. Dylan’s style is suited well to Burleigh with his raw and radical style and it was great to see the kid blowing up. Little Gazali is so popular here on the Gold Coast it’s really funny, everyone seems to know him and its his first time here! There are all sorts of characters that know Gazali from their yearly travels to Sumbawa and have known the little guy from when he was a baby. Gaz unfortunalely had an early knock out of today’s event too.
The Quiksilver Indonesia team also entered the Currumbin Alley Classic over the weekend. This is one of the most prestigious Open Mens events on the Gold Coast with competitors all ripping so hard. The surfers from around here are born with this sick fluid style that is certainly easy on the eyes. Mustafa (Bali) and little 15 year old Gazali (Sumbawa) completely tore their heats and knocked out a few unhappy locals. Go boys!
Dylan unfortunately got cramps and had to pull out of his heat. The contest was eventually taken out by local ripper Cory Ziems.
Thanks to commentator Andrew McCinnon and his wife for inviting the Bali crew over to his house for a mean Aussie barbeque after the contest.
The Quiksilver house we are staying at is full of all the best Quik boys from all over Australia. It’s a great environment for the Indo boys to be around as everyone is so psyched and just feeds of each other all day.
Well we’ve just cooked a massive dinner and about ready to call it a day. Keep you posted on tomorrow’s continuation of the Hurley Pro Junior.
Hamish here reporting from the Quiksilver house at Currumbin Beach, Gold Coast.
