Hi there all! After nearly 6 weeks down under team Quiksilver Indonesia has finally made it back home to the shores of Bali.
Just to sum up the last leg of competition, the Billabong Pro Junior on the Sunshine Coast – Mustafa was the last Indo man left in the competition and unfortunately couldn’t overtake his opponents in the 3rd round. Mus made the most of the onshore conditions but unfortunate inconsistency of waves caused the little guy to scramble for any waves coming through which resulted in a low collection of scores.
The next day the swell picked up and we surfed Alexandria Point which was riddled with crazy long boarders young and old. They were running over people and their boards like no tomorrow. It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen! So we surfed the inside section with WCT rookie Jeremy Flores and got some fun long rights all morning.
When we got back to the apartment I get a phone call to get back home to Bali on the next flight because the “Young Guns” are heading to Bali to shoot their next video and want us involved. For those that don’t know “The Young Guns” is a Quiksilver video series that includes only the current best Quiksilver groms on earth. The project has a 5 star cater with only the best perks involved such as helicopters, luxury boats etc. This years Young Guns include Clay Marzo (HAW), Rye Craike (AUS), Julian Wilson (AUS), Dane Reinolds (USA) and new comer Garrett Parkes (AUS) all chaperoned by Jake “The Snake” Patterson and legend spokeperson John Shimooka.
So anyway we packed our bags and headed down the coast towards Sydney. The swell was solid on the last few days of our trip and we scored really good waves at Currumbin Alley, just long rippable 30 second rides. The swell seemed to be picking up that evening and we all had one thought in our heads – The Super Bank! None of us had surfed the famous Snapper Point before and we were psyched! So we woke up at 4am and headed straight down there to beat the crowds only to find that there were more than 40 people already in the water, in the dark! We couldn’t believe it, there was everyone out there from Gary Elkerton to Joel Parko to Goat boaters to swimmers. It was a pretty chaotic scene and after a few smoking waves we were happy to get out of the water.
That night we stayed in Balinna with Ex WQS Warrior Joe Hudson and scored epic Lennox head in the morning. But enough about our oz trip.. When we got back home to Bali we were instantly greeted with perfect waves. We hooked up with the young guns boys, all I can say is when this movie (Young Guns 3) comes out you are all in for treat. Sick waves and unbelievable surfing this thing is going to blow you away!
Mustafa and the Young Guns crew are in G-land right now scoring some amazing kegs I’m sure. For those overseas right now – the waves are going off over here!
During the next month Quiksilver will be hosting a tour of contests throughout Indo called ‘The King of the Groms’. Winners from each region will be sent to Bali for the regional final. The best grom/winner will then be sent to Capbreton, France to compete against the best groms in the world. How cool is that!
First stop will be Gazali Hamzah’s homeland Lakey Peak, Sumbawa. Will let you all know more as we go along. Ciao for now! – Hamish.
