**** MORNING SURF UP-DATE**** Good morning crew and welcome back to the baliwaves.com for the goss on todays surf and weather conditions around Bali . Well as usual I was down doing your surf recon for ya’s at 6.45am and I’m happy to say that there’s still plenty of sell hitting the Outer Reefs of Tuban. Wave height between Kuta Reef and Airport Left was ranging between 3-5ft with Middle Reef breaking at a solid 4-5ft. The tide was still running out for a 1.1mtr Low set for around 9.00am and the wind was coming lightly on-shore outta the WSW @ 1-3knot. Surfing conditions were still clean and smooth and there were surfers out on all 3 sections at the time. Hopefully the wind will swing around to the ESE-SE as the day gets under way, if it does there’s gunna be some great waves breaking on every reef from Kuta Reef all the way down to Uluwatu. And I reckon Uluwatu would have to be pushing the 6-8 foot mark today. If not, then there’s always the East Coast to go search up some waves. Weather wise outside, and we’ve got pretty well nothing but blue sky around Tuban but there’s still some solid cloud banks down to the South. Right now at 8.30am the temperature is sitting on 25 degree’s Celcius. Ok I’m gunna start loading ya’s up those NEW VIDEO CLIPS right now and then I’m gunna start editing a couple of bodyboarding videos for the rest of you. So make sure ya flick through the video section ! I also wanna let everyone know that helped out baliwaves.com securing the deposit on our new Cannon XL2 video machine. We have her, now I’ve just gotta learn how to use her and then pay her off, I’m totally stoked, THANKS !!!
Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa; 11th April ‘07 Made’s sms’d through that wave height has jumped up into the solid 5-6ft range this morning and that there were 10 surfers out on Lakey Peak at 7.00am. There weren’t any takers for the more hollow waves of Lakey Pipe, but he did mention that if the wind holds off till late morning Periscopes is going to be cranking. No new arrivals or departures to/from Lakey’s yesterday so the total number of visiting surfers in the area remains at 40.
Kandui Surfing Resort / Mentawai islands; 10th April ’07 It was a tough day to be a surf guide! The forcasts were calling for bigger swell today and we were all amped. But a storm pasted through last night and left the ocean with a lot of morning sickness and a lingering light west wind. We made an attempt to look for surf early, but it was clear to see once we got out of our protected little zone that we would find no clean surf, so we made a U turn and spent the morning surfing 4 Bobs. It wasn’t bad. A little overhead and glassy. It was probably the only wave around that wasn’t getting all the leftover storm chop After that, we were keeping our eye on the wind and hoping for something to happen. Suddenly, the winds went east and we were all grabbiing our boards. Both boats left together and we checked out Hideaways. The ocean had cleaned up and we saw a really nice set just as we pulled up, glassy and a couple of feet overhead. It was looking a little heavy so one boat took off for Beng Beng while we stayed. We were in the water about 10 minutes and the winds switched north! We stuck it out for a while, but lunch started sounding like our best option so back we went. Beng Beng can handle a north wind somewhat well so our second boat found some fun surf there. They stayed for their usual long session and returned to the resort around 3. We made another attempt at finding some surf in the afternoon, but that funk was still in the water making just about everywhere look unappealing. Beng Beng looked pretty fun and I’m sure you would have been stoked to surf it, but our crew looked at the side/offshore head high waves and decided to pass. I said, “you guys are officially spoiled!”. They had to aggree. We ended up surfing Pitstop for a change of pace. Shoulder high plus and decent conditions. We didn’t stay out that long. Wanted to get back buy happy hour! Hoping for better conditions tomorrow and for our swell to hang in there.
Kandui / Mentawai islands; 9th April ’07 The waves out front didn’t look a lot different than it did yesterday. Pretty small. But the forecasts were calling for a good dose of west in this newest swell and, sure enough, as we left the playgrounds area in the boat early this morning we could see little lines coming into Baby Kandui’s. Kalian was sitting on the nose of the boat as we passed by and he gave me the thumbs up, knowing we would find some good surf. First stop was Hideaways. We saw a couple of head high plus waves there, but it had a little morning sickness so we moved on hoping to get something better. E-Bay wasn’t pulling in lot of the new swell so we pushed on to Beng Beng. The waves were a little overhead there and it was looking fun. Light, variable winds and no one was out again. (We have not seen a charter boat in days!) We surfed for a couple of hours and the waves keep getting bigger and bigger. When a 8 wave or so set rolled in 3 feet plus overhead, we decided to look to see if anything else was beginning to work. E-Bay was looking glassy and empty, but it still didn’t look like it was getting enough swell. We went back to Hideaways and we could see the backs of the waves from quite a distance, complete with the offshore spray. We were pretty amped when we arrived to see waves 3 feet plus overhead with glassy conditions. Our second boat was there. They had already surfed for hours and were back on the boat enjoying some snacks and drinks. We jumped out and surfed until the early afternoon. The winds came up west then and it was just the excuse we needed to go get some lunch. The winds stayed west the rest of the day so we stuck around the resort. Some went to 4 Bobs, some John Candy’s, and me and Sam actually tried to get a couple out at Rifles. (Too small.) 4 Bobs was the best wave around with shoulder high waves and perfect conditions. There was surfing going on until nightfall. Expecting the waves to get even bigger tomorrow .
