**** AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE **** Hello again and thanks for calling by for the run down on today’s surf and weather conditions around Bali. Well like I said yesterday wave height did start to kick in after lunch and by 5.00pm we had some really nice waves breaking on Kuta Reef in the 3-4ft range. Earlier this morning when I went down for the surf check of the Outer Reefs here in Tuban wave height was still coming through in the 2-4ft+ range between Kuta Reef and Airport Left and surfing conditions were clean enough even though the wind was coming lightly outta the West. So gassed up the old motor bike and made the trip down to the Southern end of the island to see what was happening at Uluwatu . I arrived down there at 8.00am hoping to see waves lining up on the Main Peak but instead it was all lumpy, bumpy and mainly closing out @ 3-5ft. There were 10 surfers in the water looking to be having a hard time with it so I never even got to set up the camera for another hour. Around 10.00am the wind started to clean up coming more off-shore, but not for long and then it went back around to the West increasing to around 10knot. All in all it was pretty ordinary down at Ulu today, I ended up shooting a total of 3.45 minutues of Digital Video in the 4 hours I was there on location. I’ll give ya’s a better look how it was as soon as I edit the video and load up a clip or two. Looks like we’ll be out with the camera gear again tomorrow for another try. Weather wise down at Uluwatu there were a few drops of rain early but it was soon replaced by blue sky. The temperature where I was musta easily been in the low to mid thirties on the Celcius scale. Right now the time has just gone 3.00pm and we’ve got some more dark cloud starting to fill the sky here in Tuban .
Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa: Made’s sms surf report came through around 8.00am and said that wave height has also picked up into the 2-3ft+ range and surfing conditions were super clean and glassy for the 19 surfers in the water on Lakey Peak and the 8 surfers across the channel at Lakey Pipe. The total number of visiting surfers staying in the Lakey area has risen to 55.
Kandui Surf Resort / Mentawai islands, 14th April ’07 ; Nobody was scrambling for their boards this morning. It was looking pretty weak out there. About as small as yesterday, but nice and glassy with light variable winds. It didn’t take long, though, to start seeing little sets trickle onto the reefs. The boys started twitching a little bit so they jumped in the boats to go see what
was up. Our photographer and long time resident of Kandui, Amen, led the way. First stop was Burgerworld. It was already getting a little big for that spot, two or three feet overhead, but our guests had a lot of fun. The swell was getting even bigger so they pulled anchor and went to Nipusi. Waves there were getting overhead as well and the boys were having fun again. Jevon surfed solo out at Bankvaults. It was heavier out there and he ended up breaking his board, but not before getting some good ones. The tide was rising and the swell was still building so the boys pulled anchor again and checked out Hideaways. It was head high there with some waves going a little bigger. They hit the water for the third time and scored some more until a little squall formed out of the west and blew it out. Good excuse to get back and eat! Meanwhile, I was at the resort taking care of a few things, but I had one eye on the ocean. 4 Bobs was a little bigger everytime I looked at it. Glassy too and no one out. Some government people came by and as Iwas talking to them I was looking over their shoulders out at the ocean watching overhead barrels…yeah barrels!…spinning down the reef at 4 Bobs. The government guy’s boat barely got off the beach and I was running for my board! Me and Kalian, one of our boat drivers, grabbed a dingy and we were out there. Yeah, out there just in time to have that squall come run us over and blow hard side shore winds our way! Rats! Lucky for us it didn’t last long and we ended up having a great time, along with many of the guests who filtered out there after they ate. A cool sight was a sampan going by with 5 or 6 of our workers heading out to John Candy’s It was well overhead, offshore, nobody out, and sets just keep pouring in out there. I knew there was probably only two of that bunch that could maybe handle it, but the rest were giving it a go, trying to take it to the next level. It was probably the best surf some of them had ever been in. So cool to see them charging like that. They all came back alive! Looking for even bigger surf tomorrow.
