MORNING SURF UP-DATE **** Good morning to all you reef riders tuning into the baliwaves.com daily surf and weather report, 7/7. Well when I went down for the 7.00am surf recon of the Outer Reefs of Tuban I was stoked to see lines peeling through at Kuta Reef in the 3-5ft range. We’ve also got a clean ESE off-shore wind happening today so surfing conditions are absolutely perfect here along Bali’s West Coast . Middle Reef was picking up waves in the solid 4-5ft+ range but the tide was just a bit to full for Middle’s to be working properly being better suited to the lower end of the tide scale. Airport Lefts also had plenty of waves breaking in the 3-4ft+ range and I’m sure that around the other side of the Airport runway Airport Right would be peeling off perfect right handers in the 3-4ft+ range. Weather wise outside it’s a big contrast from yesterday afternoon when the sky blacked out and it absolutely pissed down rain for about 3 hrs straight. (Poppies Lanes and Legian street woulda been underwater for sure). This morning we’ve got a blue sky and a great day for the beach coming on. Me I’ve got some stuff I gotta get done first up but I’m hoping that at some stage today I’ll be sitting in the channel at Kuta Reef with the 600mm lens. Right now at 9.00am the tide is still pretty full but when she runs out there could even be a few small ones breaking down at Padang Padang not too mention all the other better known Low Tide locations along the West Coast. So try and find the time to drop by later this evening. At the very least I’ll have another Video Clip for ya’s to watch. Have a good one and we hope to see ya’s over here in Bali this year !
Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa ; The waves must be smoking over at lakeys this morning as well cause Made sent his sms surf report 3 times. It told of waves in the 4-6ft range peeling off on Lakey Peak for the 18 surfers that were already in the water at 7.00am. No one was taking on the back door sections of Lakey Pipe. He also mentioned that there was a fair bit of traffic making the half hour trek down to Periscopes. There was no wind at all at the time and surfing conditions were smooth as silk. The total number of visiting surfers staying in the Lakey area has jumped to 60.
Kandui Surf Resort / Mentawai islands 15th April ’07; I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun, yet felt like I got the short end of the stick as much as I did today! The swell was looking good this morning. Two or three feet overhead at 4 Bobs and super glassy. Both our boats were taking off to look for the best spots, but I had not finished handing out the payroll to our staff
so I told them to leave without me. After I was done with that I walked back to the restaurant to get something to eat and I could see that 4 Bobs was looking really fun and nobody was out. I woofed a little food down and got out there. The wind was coming up ever so slightly out of the southeast and that was crumbling the lips a little bit, but he faces were glassy and I was getting two or three good top turns per wave. At least as good as I can do them. Most waves were head to two feet over, and there was the occasionally plus. I would take the second or third wave of the set and watch two or three more go by while I was paddling out. It was almost a sin to see so many fun waves go by with nobody on them. It didn’t take too long before my arms were shot from getting so many waves, and by then the wind had come up a little er so I headed for shore. I was feeling pretty good about my session, but then one of our boats came back and told me about the waves they had been getting. They went to Hideaways and it was two or three feet overhead and offshore and barreling with nobody out. They had tales of tube rides, broken boards, and skin left on the reef. And, of coarse, then came the obligatory, “you really missed it!” So I go back to work, mumbling a little under my breath, and as I come back for lunch the boys are heading out again. “Kandui’s is going off!”, they said. We were having shrimp for lunch that were probably the biggest I’ve ever seen in my life and the tide was looking a little low to me for Kandui’s, so I passed and said I’d catch up with them in a bit. I ate those shrimp until I was about to pop and let the tide come in. I grabbed my board and, just as my feet touched the sand, I felt the wind switch to south, with even a little west in it. Nooooooooo! The guys came back within minutes after the wind switch and I had to hear it again. “You really missed it!” Two to three feet overhead again, perfect conditions, no one out, and barreling down the reef. I had to hear the tales again of deep barrels, long barrels….. Bastards! So I spent the rest of the afternoon back out at 4 Bobs, which handles that kind of wind, and a few of the guests came out as well and we had a great time surfing overhead waves until the sun went down. No one else out but us. Our photographer had a little slide show of the waves today at Hideaways and Kandui’s, and you know what? I really missed it! Looking for the waves to wind down a little tomorrow.
